Perhaps says it all that there's no thread (that I could see) just eight hours before kick-off
So what can be said, what side Rafa puts out will show if he really thinks we can still finish fourth. From what I read this morning he is still talking it up, reckons we can't afford another slip-up and need to put this year's poor away form behind us, but despite neither side ahead of us winning yesterday, both citeh and spudz, and arguably villa, still have a big advantage.
So what of the two teams? Well Burnley are all but relegated, even three wins out of three might not be enough. Their GD is terrible so seven points would probably see them go down and nine would mean their relegation rivals would need to pick up one or less points.
Premiership 09/10
HOME/AWAY
Burnley (home) : P17 W6 D5 L6 F21 A24 PTS 23
Liverpool (away) : P17 W4 D5 L8 F14 A20 PTS 17
Liverpool's last six away include games away to Man Utd, Man City and Arsenal. Burnley were beaten 1-6 at home by Man City
LAST SIX HOME/AWAY
Burnley (home) : LLLDLW = 4/18 points
Liverpool (away) : DLLDLD = 3/18 points
LAST SIX OVERALL
Burnley : LWLLLL = 3/18 points
Liverpool : WDDWLW = 11/18 points
In terms of head to head, Burnley haven't been in the top flight since 75/76 but there have been a few cup meetings inbetween as well as the reverse fixture in the Premiership earlier in the season.
LAST 10 HEAD TO HEADS
09/10 LIV 4-0 BUR (PREM)
04/05 BUR 1-0 LIV (FAC)
96/97 LIV 1-0 BUR (FAC)
94/95 LIV 1-0 BUR (FAC-R)
94/95 BUR 0-0 LIV (FAC)
94/95 BUR 1-4 LIV (LC)
94/95 LIV 2-0 BUR (LC)
82/83 BUR 1-0 LIV (LC)
82/83 LIV 3-0 BUR (LC)
78/79 LIV 3-0 BUR (FAC)
The seasons we played them in struck me as having a common theme, bar one.
04/05 European Champions
96/97 n/a
94/95 League Cup Winners
82/83 League Champions, League Cup Winners
78/79 League Champions
Obviously in the last two seasons cited we were dominant, but if you were to pick three other seasons at relative random (in terms of us playing one side ie Burnley), then what odds two of the three we'd have ended the season with a trophy? Bear in mind how many other seasons we won something after 1990.
Or maybe the omen is in 96/97 when we lost the CWC semi to PSG......................................
