Think Riise with two feet and a better footballing brain Sabre. He is versatile, can pass, cross, delivers a great freekick or corner, and works hard, but maybe doesn't use his physical attributes as much as he should. Decent header, tackler with average pace who reads the game well and has a good first touch.
He is not an all action box to box midfielder like Gerrard but someone who arrives in the box unnoticed and unexpectedly and scores his fair share of goals.
The reason for my comparison with Riise is I think he suffers/suffered a little from lack of confidence especially earlier in his career. Since becoming Captain and getting a few games for England he seems to have blossomed. Still doesn't get his shorts dirty very often though and maybe could use a little more aggression.

He can play CB/LB/LWB/LM/DM/CM Bob. He's probably best as a LM /DM/CM. The only real reasons I can see is that with us playing a 3 in midfield Rafa thinks we need extra cover now Sissoko has gone, and combining this with Barry's versatility on the left, he would be ideal. Alternatively maybe Alonso is going?

For me I think we have three central midfielders that offer more than gary barry and with lucas an exellent young propostion there needs to be room for him to get through
