All in all, I think the media would be creaming themselves over him if he was a Scouser with short hair.

The other factor in the "will Lucas and/or Babel make it next season" question is, what if they don't? By that, I mean we've just spunked 20 million quid and probably a bit of change on top signing them. If neither made it, the last closed season would have to go down as a disasterous one as far as transfers were concerned. For the good of the long term development of the team and club, we could really do with at least one of them becoming an absolute top-class player in his own right. Like I said in my monologue, my money would be more on Lucas out of the two.

He returned after his injury and bedded straight into this new system and for those first two or three games after his injury, he looked like he was returning to some sort of form, but since he's been sliding. I'm not talking about "hollywood" passes, I mean simple basic skills. He's playing simple passes asstray, he's not creating much and he's even seemed to lose awareness of other players around him. He seems to dwell on the ball alot more than is allowed in this league and I think he's been helped by Mascherano more than anybody else. Mascherano has covered for Alonso and Lucas (who the topic is about) and made up for their mistakes.
I really think this is utter balls! Sorry John, not wanting to have a pop at you, but it feels to me just becasue some people are saying Alonso is playing below par now everyone jumps on the bandwagon.
Some players take a season to get into thing in the Premiership and others have an absolute flyer, mainly because the oppo do not know the strengths of the new guy. I think in Alonsos first season, he had more time as nobody knew how good he was. Now he doesn't get a second, but he still rarely gives the ball away, he tackles brillinatly and is for me the perfect partner to both Mascha and Gerrard.
I think some fans have been blinded by the brilliance of his first season, but I honestly believe, he would play in ANY of the Premierships teams every game with the performances he has put in every season he has been with us.
Lucas for me is one for the future. In an ideal world he would come off the bench and gain some experience (and some muscle/weight). Alonso has to stay at Liverpool.
don't get me wrong mate, I think Alonso is a great player and maybe it's because his standards are so high that he's looking below par, but he really hasn't been the same player for some time. he's disappointed me in recent weeks, and I'm not jumping on any bandwagon, because as people know, I'm not one who follows the crowd, but I really haven't seen the best of Xabi Alonso for about 24 months now.
I'm just wondering if there's a little bit of truth in those stories earlier in the season. The ones concerning Alonso and Reina being homesick, both have come in for criticism of late and I am just wondering if they are homesick and will be off in the summer. I hope neither go and hope both can regain their best of form. Lets not forget that Alonso has recently had a kid, so the homelife won't be as easy as it was when he first arrived.
