Joey barton

Liverpool Football Club - The Rumour Mill

Liverpool have been linked with a possible move for Manchester City's Joey Barton.

Various British newspapers are reporting that manager Rafael Benitez is considering making an offer for the 23-year-old midfielder who former boss Gerard Houllier tried to sign.

The Huyton-born Barton is close to several members of the Liverpool squad and would jump at the chance to play for the Reds if the opportunity came along.

City have apparently offered Barton a new contract but there are a number of clubs who have expressed their interest in the player.

Wasn't Owen an Evertonian by birth? And hasn't Carra a big Everton tattoo on his chest?

Barton was a tramp but appears to have got his head right this year and he looks a player.

A bit of a poor man's Gerrard. If he kept his nose clean he can do better than Man City.

I think Barton is a very good footballer who chips in with a decent amount of goals from midfield.
He puts himself about and has a very good football brain.
But due to his past disciplinary problems and due to the strength in depth we have in that position unless the fee was low (which it wouldnt be) i couldnt see rafa going for him.
We already have Sissoko and although imo Barton is a better alround player Momo is 20 years of age...a few years younger than Barton so i think Rafa will be intent on grooming him into the main defensive midfielder for the next 10 years or so.
One other thing about Barton, much as i like him for a centre midfielder he is not tall enough, i am not one of those people who likes big tall players, but in a defensive midfielder i would prefer them to be winning most headers and preventing long punts from the keeper ending up putting pressure on the centre halves. I know Makelele is hardly the tallest and Chelsea are rock solid with him, but i dont think Joey Barton has anywhere near the positional sense as Makelele.

I would take Barton. Another for the future - he could play for LFC for years to come.

Hamann is getting on a bit. I could see Sissoko and Barton rotating in the midfield.

Is it just me or does anyone else potentially see Rafa gearing up for a change in tactics. I can see him potentially going for a 3-5-2 formation before long!! The ongoing rumours of further midfield players leads me to believe this.
