soon the rule is coming in where 8 out of your 25 squad must be homegrown

so you can forget signing foreigners this summer, we need quality englishmen

thats why carlton cole must sign

Prices will rocket if we start chasing "quality Englishmen" and buy star players from clubs like West Ham. It's a shame we didn't try and get Warnock back, or for that matter sold him in the first place. Of course we decided against Owen, some seem less than keen on Joe Cole if he were available on a free, but sure, let's spend £15m+ on Carlton.

All seems a bit "token gesture", as if 1/3 of the players being homegrown is going to right wrongs or make the club any more English. Still means British will be expensive as it always was and the dearth of quality just means more average brits will cost excessively more than quality foreigners.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

this. his injury record is also terrible.

actually thinking about it, he'd be ideal for us :D

the fact is we will currently struggle with the 8/25 homegrown players (unless we want kids who clearly aint ready as a part of the squad)

we need a few more

this is a fact.

We won't struggle with the homegrown quota. What the new rules will do is focus our attention on getting the most out of the 17 foreign (strictly, non-homegrown) places and to force us to think harder about the overall balance of the squad.

8 homegrown:

Gerrard
Carragher
Johnson
Insua
Pacheco
Kelly
Spearing
Darby

17 who are foreign and over 21:

Reina
Cavalieri
Gulcasi
Aurelio
Agger
Skrtel
Kyrgiakos
Benayoun
Riera
Babel
Lucas
Masch
Aquilani
Kuyt
Maxi
Torres
Ngog

U21s:
Ayala
Bruna
Amoo
Mavinga
Plessis
etc..

(I stand to be corrected on one or two)

I've left Degen out as he's likely to be on his bike come the end of the season. The problem then is if we wanted to sign a player with similar credentials to Santa Cruz we'd have to omit one of the players on that list of 17. You'd look to remove (for example) the likes of Babel, Ngog and Lucas and the two spare goalies with the aim of making better use of the 17 foreign spaces available. So there is room for manouevre if the player we need to bring in is likely to have a more important role, and Santa Cuz is one such player.

"A homegrown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)."
