Newspapers do make things up you know  :D

The problem I and other people have with goal.com is they regurgitate newspaper rumours which themselves are based on speculation and lack quotes.

I have nothing against you by the way, it's just a bit depressing to see 5 articles from goal all saying Alonso's leaving when they're probably based on the same newspaper article.

Back on topic....I'd like to see a slightly more attacking midfielder replace Xabi. Yes he controls games but we win games without him. I wonder if we'd had a more attacking threat from midfield if it would have helped against the Stokes etc who parked the bus.

I agree Bammo a more attacking player would do us good vs teams like Stoke who park the bus.

Any suggestions who that player could be?

Sure, Alonso was a very important part of our team last season, but come of it plz.

This is LFC not Alonso FC. There was another 10 players on the field wearing red and they were also important.
If we loose Alonso it is because he doesn't want to be a part of LFC and then I don't want him wearing that sweater either. But if
the valuation isn't meet then we should keep him.

I trust the same man who brought Xabi to the club to find a
good replacement and even if we won't play exactly the same it doesn't have to mean we will play worse.

A little bit more attacking cm wouldn't hurt when we have a pretty hard working defensive outlook from the start.
Masch is world class at protecting the back four and Kuyt, well, he works very hard and will be playing next season.

Xabi is 28, getting married, wanting to go back to Spain I can understand, and if we can get 30 million+ for someone who doesn't want to be here then I will accept that and eagerly wait for a player coming in that want to give his all for the club.

Well, it is hard to pick names because whoever you pick all Alonso lovers will point out how inferior they all are to him.

No player available can spray balls left and right like him, but
more offensive direct players like Snejider and Aquilani could do a job and score some goals.

But maybe Rafa knows of some gem in Spain that will cost around what Xabi cost or less, is waitng in the wings.

Not so sure we will go for an experienced well known top class cm, but instead opt for a cheaper lesser known player.
Not that he would be poor but would have a tough job on his hands to convince everyone.

Stephen Ireland would be great but as has been discussed we'd probably have to overpay to get him from Man City. We could always make a cheeky bid for Fabregas...

I'll admit my knowledge of European football is now shocking since the demise of the Italian league following the match-fixing malarky. There are young English players like Mark Noble coming through but even he is defensive.

I'd like to see Arteta here but he'd never come because a) he's said he won't, b) Xabi's probably told him Rafa chews his ear off and c) he'd end up on the wing anyway!

So to answer your question...I don't really know

I'd be prepared to try the youngsters (Lucas, Spearing etc) or dropping Gerrard back for some games if we get another attacking threat (Aguero  Sneijder, Van der Vaart)

If it's Arteta it will be a good buy, but he's a dangerous player for the disciples of the school of Bigmick, because I can see more danger than in any other player to see him playing in varied positions. He can occupy the position of Kuyt, he can do the role Gerrard does now, and he can certainly play a partnership in the middle.
