Rafael Benitez eyes David Silva after Xabi Alonso nears exit to Real Madrid

After more than a year of speculation, the saga surrounding Xabi Alonso's future is likely to be concluded by the end of the week, with the 27 year-old Spain international moving to Real Madrid for more than £30 million, Liverpool's asking price.

Real are thought to be unhappy at having to pay a premium for a player of limited commercial appeal, but the club's president, Florentino Perez, knows he will have to succumb to Liverpool's hardball stance to land his first-choice target. On Merseyside, though, thoughts are already turning to adapting to life without their Basque metronome.

Benitez's first act will be to secure the future of Javier Mascherano, despite the Argentina captain being tempted by the prospect of a move to Barcelona.

His manager, though, would not countenance losing both of his central midfielders in a few weeks and he is likely to inform Mascherano that he will be staying on Merseyside. Once the Argentine commits himself to Anfield, negotiations on a new contract are expected to start.

The Spaniard will then begin the more arduous task of replacing Alonso. Armed with the majority of the fee generated by his sale, Benitez is likely to return for David Silva, the Valencia playmaker.

Sylvain Distin, the Portsmouth defender, is another long-term target, though Benitez has ruled out a swap deal for Alonso involving Wesley Sneijder, the Dutch international, whose arrival would have gone some way to softening the blow of losing the former Real Sociedad player. Another central midfielder, though, would remain a priority, with Athletic Bilbao's Javi Martinez perhaps the most likely option.

Benitez has been tracking the energetic 20 year-old for some time, while he has also been linked with Inter Milan's Esteban Cambiasso, an international team-mate of Mascherano.

The Spaniard is also known to be an admirer of Lee Cattermole, of Wigan, and Liverpool's need to boost their English quotient to meet the Champions League squad quota would make him an attractive proposition, though he may baulk at his £8 million asking price.

Hi ho silva
:nod

Silva: Yes please!!!

Sneijder: Dont see why rafa doesn't like him, I think he's a good player

Martinez: Looks promising, but still raw. Though as gone on record saying he doesn't want to move to england at this point in his career link

Cambiasso: yes, would be quite happy with him

Cattermole: does look good, but dont know if he could produce the goods this season in the same way as any of the 4 players above could

If Mascha is to stay then Cambiasso would be the sensible choice given that he and Mascha already know each others game. He is also a little older and wiser than the others we are quoted with so should be able to adapt to the EPL quicker (at least you would think).

I can't see this happening but there is a ready made replacement already living in Liverpool who would easily slot into our team and is a proven performer in the EPL. I can't see it happening but Mikel Arteta would be ideal for us.

Surely he has to look at the Top 4 then look at the finances in place at Man City and, too a lesser degree, Spurs and Villa and see that Everton are not going to get into the Champs League anytime soon. If he has ambitions with Spain etc then he surely has to move to a bigger club. Working under Rafa would take him to the next level.

But....it's highly unlikely Everton would sell him to us.

If we got Silva after selling Alonso then I would be a happy man   But there would still be a gap in the midfield which I think Javi Martinez can replace.

I dont want Alonso to go but 35m is a lot of money and we could get two class players for that.  But if he stays then Im happy as well.

In fact this could be a win win situation as we wont get that money next year for him, in fact deep down I dont think he is worth that now but Madrid are having one of their crazy money periods so we might as well take advantage of that.

The one thing that does confuse me is I thought Alonso was a Basque and therefore didnt see Madrid as a viable option.  I assumed that Barca would come in for him

Says the same on that liverpool twitter site, dont know if its reliable or not though  :Oo:

I can't get excited by the prospect of us signing silva as i can't shake this nagging feeling off that he won't make it in the premier league , he's too small , light weight so and so forth . As anyone seen how silva has performed this season for valencia ?
