If we get more than 25 million for him it's a decent deal. Fact.

Well OK, if we get more than 25 million for him it's a decent deal. Opinion.

Do you know whats making me angry in all of this , This money plus player buissiness , i dont want any of there rejects im sorry , if there not good enough to play for them there certainly not good enough to play for us, we are the ones who humiliated them, None of this money plus player buissiness , straight 35 million or more for me an if they dont accept it then as far as im concerned Xabi stays,

I agree with tht Nan. This isn't fecking Swap Shop on a saturday morning, we haven't all got patterned jumpers on and we don't all talk like "Cheggers" FFS. If we want any of their players, we'll fecking let em know sometime in the future as far I'm concerned, in the meantime, splash the cash or feck off.

Let's hope Rafa is as stern as we would be when/if it comes down to it. Be a shame to lose him though. My favourate match with Xabi was that FA Cup tie with Luton. He scored 2 cracking goals that day. They were both superb strikes but the 2nd will always be remembered as it was from in his own half. But what was great about that was that it was with his bad foot.

26mil plus negredo maybe? I'd take that

Rather keep him though, but looks like that ideas doomed

I'll have words though  :p

If we lose both alonso and masch I cant help but think we're f.ucked next season, surely we'll keep one

Shame too cos if we kept the whole squad then we would probably be favourites for the league

Sabre made the point earlier that if Ronaldo was worth 80 million and Kaka 55 mill then Alonso was worth a huge sum. I'm not so sure. In Ronaldo you're getting a bloke who has almost single handedly won the Mancs the title in the last two seasons. He scored 40 odd goals from right wing a couple of seasons back, so yes I do think he is worth much more than Xabi. Similarly, In Kaka you are getting a recent World player of the year winner.

Much as we all love Xabi, lets be realistic here for a second. He is a central midfielder who doesn't score nor split defenses with passes. He keeps the ball well and reads it well, and at what he does he is one of the best. He isn't though a Ronaldo or a Kaka, and neither by a distance is he a Gerrard either. 25 million is the same as Man City paid for Carlos Tevez, more than the Mancs paid for Carrick, twice what City paid for Barry etc etc. I think it's about right, even in todays "crazy" market.

Fair enough, Mick.  In Sabre's defense, he has made the comparison to Diarra a couple of times recently (though perhaps not this one around), which is more revealing.  Can't recall exactly what Madrid paid Pompey for the fella in January but it was a fair wedge.  I think Sabre's correct in suggesting that we approach Madrid with the statement 'if you're going to pay 20-something million for Lassana Diarra we should be looking to have you pay 30-odd million for Alonso.'

At the end of the day, I don't think we'll get 30 million + but I do think we are doing the right thing by keeping the price high and making them work for it.

I don't have problems to consider 25M right for Alonso. The problem I have is when I knock the doors of Keanes and Glen Johnsons or Barrys last year and they ask what they ask for them.

The mentioned players are not the kind of players who make differences to win leagues. If you sell an important part of your midfield (Mascherano is as important I agree rbg in another thread) and then they ask you a fortune to fill your RB position, or they ask you 20M for an Irish international that is not that good, then we have a problem.

Spot on, it's a seller's market and from our perspective a £25m fee has to be considered in relative terms precisely because we have to venture back in to find a replacement (you'd think that's fairly likely at least), and as a major player we're particularly affected when it comes to buying. It appears a healthy sum, one that you could benchmark against Barry and argue to be more than acceptable, or another like Diarra and argue as almost derisory or at least well short of the mark; either way as a seller it's not particularly relevant to our position going forward. Of course we should still be using the tactics Bob suggests because that's just part and parcel of negotiation. Then when it comes to getting a replacement we use the old 'well this guy Barry cost £12m and your guy's a touch inexperienced and that's a bit more of a risk you see' etc. :blues:

While we're negotiating, Rafa could pull a similar face to the one in your signature mate.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez puts £30 million tag on Xabi Alonso

Rafael Benitez will refuse to let Xabi Alonso move to Real Madrid unless the Spanish club match his £30 million asking price, even though the player is believed to have made it clear to his manager that he wishes to leave Liverpool

In public, Alonso has remained non-committal on his future amid feverish speculation linking him with the Bernabeu and he has, thus far, not handed in an official transfer request. In private, though, it is thought the player has his heart set on a return home after five years on Merseyside.

The pair’s relationship is thought to have soured over the last 18 months after clumsy attempts to offload the player last summer, but Benitez remains adamant he will not be pressured into selling a player he wishes to keep should Real fail to meet the asking price.

Their last bid is believed to have been around £20 million. Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano, the man tasked with making club president Florentino Perez’s whims in the transfer market reality, admitted last week an agreement was “some way off”, although that has been read in some quarters as acknowledgement from Spain that Alonso may need to act himself to break the deadlock.

Manuel Pellegrini, the Real Madrid manager, and Miguel Pardeza, the club’s sporting director, have both suggested since then that Madrid’s interest is undimmed.

Even a transfer request may not be enough. Benitez is also facing a battle to keep hold of Javier Mascherano, Alonso’s midfield partner, another player thought to have intimated a wish to move to pastures new, with Barcelona his preferred destination.

In both cases, the Liverpool manager is resolute enough to risk retaining unsettled players unless a suitable offer arrives.

Both are due to meet up with their Liverpool team-mates this week following international duty.

Benitez has been linked with the likes of Esteban Cambiasso, of Inter Milan, and fellow midfielder Javi Martinez, of Athletic Bilbao, but he knows replacing one player, let alone both, would be both expensive and disruptive as he seeks the pre-season stability needed to challenge for the title.

hmm not sure I agree with this Nanny and BM. I think £20 million plus Robben, Snejder or Van Nistelroy would be a very good piece of business. They are all quality players who have been stuck in a fecked up team. They have more than proven themselves in the past though, not that any of them are past it in my opinion.

Van Nistelrooy is 33 and was valued as low as £1.5m recently (although by papers).

It'd be a terrible piece of business if we only got £20m + him for Alonso.

ok but Snejder and Robben would be good. Wouldn't really mind Van Horseface either but agree with the valuation.

Sneider and Robben (git that he is) would be great additions to our squad. I'd like us to put a cheeky low bid in for one of them as soon as the Alonso situation is sorted whichever way it goes
