Many alternatives? I was thinking Xavi, and I'am sure Barca would be happy to sell to them. Rafa should be asking for stupid money for Alonso.

That quote from Madrid stands out like a laser exactly why we should keep Xabi and not sell him.

I feel that a club statement with, "Xabi Alonso is not for sale at any price, so f*ck off", is the only way to resolve this agreeably.

It's funny, how just a year ago, we were willing to sell Alonso, to anyone for just for 16 mill.

I feel the last two words added may make Real understand a little better.

We can make as many statements as we like though, ultimately in modern football if the player wants to go it's very dfficult to stand in their way. Yes you can dig your heels in martin O'Neill style, but it is a huge risk. This is even more the case with a player like Alonso, who despite having a lofty price tag on his head as of now was worth barely 2/3 of his current value only twelve months ago.

It would only take a return, coincidently or otherwise to the form he showed in seasons 2,3 and 4 of his Liverpool career for his value to plummet back to the low teens it was last Summer, and for the debate to return to the much vaunted "unseen" work.

I think the best bet is to find out if his heart is really in it. If it isn't, we should sell him for the best price we can get. Unfortunately, if it's the case that Real Madrid are the only team who are interested, we may have to accept that we aren't going to quite get some of the Monopoly money fees bandied about on here. 24 million quid might not be as much as some would hope for, but at least it's ten million more than anyone was prepared to pay for him this time last year. Time to get it sorted one way or another I think.

The words never did flow quite so freely when the actual subject of football was at hand did they  Glad you agree though, although in fairness it's probably hard to think otherwise. If he doesn't want to play for us any more, there's not an awful lot we can do about it.

More more Madrid

Valdano has played down talk of another high-profile acquisition in Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, admitting the two clubs were some distance apart in their valuation of the 27-year-old.

The capital club have not been shy in expressing their admiration for Alonso but, much like Ribery, appear set to miss out this summer.

"The whole world knows he is a player who always seemed interesting to us. He is a man who is a gifted organiser and is at a mature stage of his career," Valdano said.

"We got closer to Liverpool but in the past few days they widened the gap by increasing the transfer fee too much for our liking. Therefore, we see the player moving away (from Real Madrid)."

However, he added: "Everything is renewable."

I have been told that 1 week ago thery put a bid in for him at 22mil. if that is true it might be a case of they dont have the buget due to other players they are after.

I read on another forum that we set his price at 35mil.

Seemingly we are looking at Esteban Cambiasso as a replacement for either Alonso or Masch. I think he would be a cracking choice if we are forced to sell. He is neither as good a passer as Alonso or as good a defensive player as Masch, but he has a more "all round game" than either. I watched him a few times when he was in Argentina years ago and was very surprised that he wasn't a "real" success with Madrid.

Would be a good choice if it comes to the crunch.
