The Alonso Thread - hands in transfer request

The ONLY offers we have had for Alonso have been £14million (from Juventus) and supposedly a bid of £18million ( from Madrid). If we get over £25million for him I will plant rockinghorse sh!t.

I think there are plenty of other players out there that can do just as good if not better job(differently), the problem as I see it, is it may effect the continuity of the side.

I would "settle" for playing Lucas or Gerrard  beside Masch if we got a top class second striker like Tevez.

We certainly missed a "trick" with Barry, but if we are going to sell Alonso, IMO it would be better sooner rather than later.

Alonso's more prone to sit deep and play longer balls into the channels. Those three are more adventurous and favour the more intricate stuff in the final third. They also don't have the physicailty or comitment in the tackle in my opinion.

The likes of Pirlo & Riquelme could come in and play in the same way but price and age might rule them out. I don't think De Rossi has the technical quality (but if Masch went I'd happily have him step in there). Carrick is a poor, poor second (and Utd wouldn't sell to us in a million years anway)

I don't think Gerrard is disciplined or savvy enough to play there and surely we'd prefer him playing off Torres given the partnership they've established?

I know id pick every single one of the names on that list before i do Alonso's... Theres more but im not sure many would agree with them... Lucho Gonzales, Riquelme, Senna, Melo, Javier Zanetti, Giggs....

Hes a very good passer and does his defensive duties very well... others offer more in different areas and i think we could use more of that especially when we have Mascherano playing alongside...

okay.

so maybe a better question is

How many players are in the world as good as him, would come to us and we could afford?

If he does leave, i think we'll have to buy someone to either replace him or as backup to a Gerrard-Mascherano pairing...
Personally, id go for Seedorf from Milan for cheap (hed do a job for a year or 2 imo, still in great shape)... Stankovic from Inter would be another good shout.. Deco if Chelsea would sell, Lucho Gonzales, Aquilani, Melo.... its not like Alonso was a worldbeater when we signed him now was he ?!

Its simple really... Alonso is the 3rd best player in our side now behind Gerrard and Torres.. if we get 35mill or so for him, i'd expect us to go out and buy a world class player (regardless of the position he plays) whos going to be our 3rd best player in the side ...

Depending on how Rafa uses the money he has at his disposal, this could actually turn out pretty good for us.. personally i dont think Alonso is worth 35mill... maybe 20mill or so but never 35... if we get that offer we should probably sell.. whats worrying though is that im not sure Rafa really knows what hes doing in the transfer market..  :lookaround

I'd happily see Stevie G back in CM if we signed David Villa to partner Torres.  If we sell Alonso for the sort of prices being talked about then this is not impossible.

I'd hate to lose Alonso, but in that scenario I could understand the logic.

Waste one of the best midfield players in the world playing him midfield ?

Gerrard has formed a good partnership with Torres, but he had a similar partnership with Owen while playing Cent. Mid. If we brought in a top class second striker (hopefully one who could also play main striker when Torres is out) I think we would have the best of all worlds.

Gerrard could play cent mid OR second striker when needed. Our new second striker could play striker when needed and Torres would still knock in the goals.

People want us to sign Villa ..... where would that leave Gerrard then ?( mkingdom has made my point for me  :D )

One player that could come step in seamlessly if Alonso was sold is Mikel at Chelsea if they were willing to sell...
Floyd stepped left and threw the hook that caught Hatton flush under the chin. Finally, the British champ had arrived in that mythical place of which his fans speak: Hatton Wonderland.

I was thinking the exact same thing.. whos to say the new forward wouldnt form just as lethal a partnership with Torres as Gerrard did... whos to say Gerrards impact when playing as a CM would be insignificant...

Its like this... if Gerrard and Torres combine to score say 60 goals a season... would anyone logically really think that a side with Torres, Gerrard and say Villa would do any worse ?!

Plus, our main problem isnt that we dont score enough... its rather our inability to break down the smaller sides and find solutions in the final third when Torres and/or Gerrard are marked out of the game... adding a third name to the mic would certainly help in that area imo...

My two penneth . I love Xabi to bits. He's a cracking player , and mascherano aswell .We won't fall to bits though should they be sold . Like we fell apart when Hunt ,keegan , Rush ,Souness and whoever else went . We buy someone better and move on . Rafa's not stupid , if he know's there's a chance they'll go ,well he''ll have someone else lined up . I remember how sick i felt when we lost the above names ,but we managed ok without them . Personally don't think they'll go , by all accounts Rafa is fighting tooth and nail to keep hold of them .
