The Spanish international's future has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks with a number of clubs thought to be lining up summer moves for the player.

Real Madrid are thought to be leading the chase for Alonso with the 27-year-old thought to be one of presidental candidate Florentino Perez's top transfer targets if he gains control at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alonso's agent Ignacio Ibanez has refused to confirm the player will remain at Anfield next season, admitting Liverpool will have the final say on any possible transfer.

"Many things could happen in the summer," Ibanez told the Daily Star.

"The first is to finish the season and after that to attend to other matters.

"Xabi has signed for three more years and his future depends on Liverpool."

---------

Could just be usual agent talk but I don't like it.

It's exactly that.

Xabi wants to stay, his agent is doing fúck all in Spain to put Xabi in the market, but it's Liverpool, i.e., Rafa, who has the last word about it. We all want Xabi stays, but the thing is that right now, it's up to Rafa. No Parry, no Hicks, but Rafa.

And personally I'm not sure that Rafa will say no to just any offer. I just hope mates that if it happens, the offer is good enough, because other teams will rip off us for quality players, and we should be doing exactly the same.

Benitez is ment to be buidling on the spine of our team that is the best in the prem and if he sells Xabi it is a major step backwards

unless he swaps him with Inesta or Xabi of Barca

Alonso is priceless for us at the moment, there is no other midfielder that we could buy to replace him.

My guess would be that Real offer a maximum of around 30 million and although this sort of money could enable us to buy a decent striker and more, Alonso would just be too big a loss and it would be a step backwards.

Ive got a lot of faith that Benitez wont sell him and Alonso has always seemed very happy at liverpool. This talk by Alonso's agent hasnt told us anything except that it is Rafa's descision to make weather or not Alonso stays.

Because there isn't that much difference in ability between Barry and Alonso although to be fair they do play slightly different roles.

Every now and again you come up with a pearler like this which merely underlines my thoughts that you are, without doubt, a complete gimp.

Was anyone watching SSN tonight? I was at the gym so had to read along with delayed subtitles but Guilleme Ballague was in the studio talking about a few things La Liga related: Wenger, Ronaldo, and he also spent some time talking about Silva to Liverpool and Xabi to Madrid. As I said I didn't get to read all of it but it sounded like if Real cannot get Ronaldo for 50Mil they will use that money to get Villa and Alonso, not only that but they will announce both those transfers on 28th May as they want the deals sown up quick. I didn't get the Silva bit as I got a stitch in my stomache whilst running so had to pause in agony but when I looked up they were just finishing the piece on him.

I didn't see it Bav, but he'll have been giving it all the "inside word" from Anfield I should think, generally larging it up. Whatever his thoughts were though, from previous experience you can probably discount them as he invariably talks utter b0ll0cks.

Rafa would be crazy to sell Alonso who is one of our best players this season. Replacing Alonso with Barry is also not the answer, in fact it's a few steps down in terms of quality. The quality Alonso brings to the squad is significant; he is the springboard for most of our attacking play. Together with Mascherano, we have 2 of the best midfielders in the world and they complement each other perfectly. Mascherano winning the ball and Alonso initiating attacks with his wide range of passing.

In short, if we want to win the league, we need all our best players and that includes XABI ALONSO!

Probably should go in rumors but it is Alonso related.

Alonso set for Anfield farewell on Sunday

Written by Max Munton on May 21st, 2009

Xabi Alonso will play his final game for Liverpool as Rafa Benitez looks to offload the Spanish international to raise transfer funds this summer, according to a report.

The Daily Express claims Benitez will accept a large big from Real Madrid and let Alonso, who is currently the fans’ player of the year, go. Paul Joyce writes:

A belated deal for Aston Villa star Barry has been secretly set up, while Benitez is also ready to seal a £10million move for Portsmouth right-back Glen Johnson, who has been on his wanted list for some time. Benitez is also interested in unsettled Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez and Valencia’s David Silva.

But before you get all worried, this is probably just the rags way causing sensational headlines and profiting from the wildest of rumours. Besides, a Liverpool spokesman last night reassured supporters, “There has been no contact from anyone and Alonso is not for sale.”

The Independent - a somewhat a more respectable source that the Daily Express however also mentions Alonso’s links with a big money move to the Spanish capital. Paul Walker writes:

Xabi Alonso is being linked with a £22m move to Real Madrid, while Ryan Babel could also be sold. Striker Andriy Voronin is also expected to be moved on.

On the recent speculation linking the Reds with a move for Argentine striker Carlos Tevez, who’s loan deal at Manchester Utd runs out at the end of this season, Walker writes:

The club say they have not made a bid to the player’s third-party owners. But Benitez is known to be keen to pair Tevez again with his compatriot Javier Mascherano, the pair having joined West Ham together in August 2006.

Sany Macaskill of The Telegraph says Aston Villa are ready to splash the cash to prevent their captain Gareth Barry from making a move to Liverpool this summer.

Initial reports have suggested that Villa are prepared to offer Barry a weekly salary of around £75,000 if he commits himself beyond the one year that he has remaining on his contract.

In the same back pages, Rory Smith has a report on Benitez’s best and worst signings since he arrived at the club in the summer of 2004. To cut a long story short, the best five are (fairly obviously) Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina, Javier Mascherano and Luis Garcia (pictured). The five flops are Robbie Keane, Jermaine Pennant, Fernando Morientes, Andrea Dossena, and somewhat harshly in my opinion, Ryan Babel.

And finally, there’s an interesting piece in this morning’s Telegraph, naming five recent occasions where managers have named controversial starting line-ups in the face of upcoming big games. With the pressure from relegation threatened clubs on Man Utd to field a normal team against Hull City this Sunday, despite Utd having the Champions League final on Wednesday, it brings back memories of Liverpool in 2007 and a moaning, bitter Neil Warnock.

With a rematch with AC Milan in the Champions League final on his mind, Rafa Benitez sent a second XI to face Lawrie Sanchez’s relegation-threatened side. Clint Dempsey’s goal against the likes of Gabriel Paletta and Mark Gonzalez secured Fulham the three points which, ultimately, kept them up and sent Sheffield United down.

Oh and in case you didn’t know, Shakhtar Donetsk beat Werder Bremen 2-1 after extra time to lift the UEFA Cup last night. But you probably don’t care.

BBC gossip reckons Madrid are confident of securing Alonso for £23m if Perez is appointed president, although the original source is hardly reliable or popular on here.

£23m would be a lot to turn down, but if we're only selling to raise funds to strengthen elsewhere then I can't see £23m stretching too much to find good enough players to fill the void. Alonso was a key part of our season this and last, to sell him would weaken the side and as I've said elsewhere, Rafa is hardly in contention for transfer of the season since none really made an impact

Keane - second most expensive signing ever was so good we sold him back soonest available chance
Dossena - most expensive defender ever now ranks as third choice LB
Degen - injury plagued freebie
N'Gog - has done ok, but hardly set the world alight
Riera - the pick of the signings, started off well and has probably done his bit to improve on last season

Our best XI this season has comprised Riera plus players who were already here. If Rafa sells Alonso then we may just end up with another Keane, Dossena or equally disappointing signing. Alonso would be on my 'reluctant to sell, among the names first on the team sheet' (Kuyt, Gerrard, Alonso, Carragher, Reina and Torres) Anyone not on that list is either not good enough full-stop or only good enough to play their part in the 1st team squad. That isn't to say Riera, Benayoun, Skrtel etc can't start, just that they aren't head and shoulders above other contenders for their respective positions. Mascherano is excluded simply because I believe we don't always need a DM so he wouldn't always be in my XI (no good putting his name first on the team sheet then crossing it out)
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

Real will only sign Alonso if they fail to get Ronaldo, at least thats what Guilleme Ballague said the other night anyway. Not only that but Real will announce both Alonso and Villa signings by the end of this month so we could see something announced soon. If it comes down to it though Rafa should try to squeeze a bit more out of Real. If they were ready to spend 70Mil on one player last year then we can at least get 27mil for Alonso.
