And think the only thing barry has over Xabi is the fact he is english but for me xabi is technically superior to barry in most aspects of the game bar barry having a better ability to burst forward where as xabi prefers to play that quarterback role to the highest level .

i just think hes overrated by our own thats all.. he keeps many clean sheets and his distribution is better than anything iv ever seen from any goalie but i just dont believe hes half as good as some claim he is... i mean some were saying he's the best in the world ! i mean come on lets not get carried away he'd hardly make the top 5 or maybe even 10 list and we'r in a time were class goalies are hard to find...
anyways it isnt that big a deal he rarely has much to do in games anyways given the way we play but funny enough he hasnt been all the great when called upon imo .. not the best when it comes to crosses and high balls in the area...

anyways back to Alonso... i think alot of his play actually depends on the players around him,... movement off the ball and positioning and all that.... better players around him =  better play from Alonso and probably more room and time to show what he has.. just imagine what he'd be like in a side like Barcelona or dare i say..ManUtd....  :shifty

Liverpool star to Real Madrid looks more likely by the day

Speculation that Xabi Alonso would be leaving Liverpool in the summer has being doing the rounds in the English press over the last few days but it was easy to overlook this particular rumor as one of many that are sprouting up in the English press

But now the Spanish press are reporting the exact same thing and that gives the story much more credence.

AS.com the widely circulated Spanish newspaper have now reported the same story albeit quoting the daily telegraph, but they have an abundance of transfer stories to copy from the English press and to choose this particular one with their Spanish connections would mean that they do indeed see meat on this story.

By all accounts the dream for Madrid is Cesc Fabregas of Arsenal and Alonso but that is highly unlikely with Fabregas wanting Barcelona if he leaves Arsenal but Alonso is much more realistic and considering that reports are that Benitez has been told he must sell to buy then Alonso is probably the highest value player that Liverpool can sell.

There will be a mass sell at Liverpool this summer, Benitez has already said this and Madrid for their part are looking to buy on mass and so as long as both sides can agree on a fee then this is one deal that may well happen.

Anyways hes having a great season and would be great if hes still around next season... hopefully we'll add some more quality in the final third (new right winger and maybe a Silva or some better backup) and that should help Xabi raise his game even more...

Disagree Ace.

For me Xabi is definitely superior to Barry as a player.
However, he would fit in better in certain formations. Barry is a marvelous player but imo is not as accomplished as Xabi who I would rate in the top 10 of central midfielders plying their trade at the moment. If we were to sell him, it would probably cost us a darn sight more than we get if we were to replace like for like.

I do agree about surrounding him with better quality players though.

Liverpool have arrived at the point whereby we'll only sell quality if replaced by better quality - theres no other way to win the league.

Sabre will know more about it than me, but I highly doubt that Alonso would consider Real, being a basque lad through and through...

It would if we didn't replace him with someone who can do as good a job I meen alonso is good he is one of best in world at his posistion but there are better players about tho who can a little more with ball IE run with it.

But as far as getting them I can't see it happening unless we have a fair budget to work off and with current owners I don't see that ever happening so as far as for me personaly letting Alonso go I say keep him for at least 1 more season and see what happens.

As for masch I could see him go in summer many clubs after him and I think we could get a massive offor.

I think either him or alonso needs to go end of season due to fact we have alot of spots on fields we are weaker in and the prem is one of those leagues where every part of your team will get tested.

So it is important to spread the tallent all over the pitch rather then have it in only a few areas.

Atm we have great spine but massive weakness down each side of flanks I feel when ever we lose goals or fail to break teams down its due to those areas so if we are to progress next season that is something rafa is going to have to address.

And this post is exactly why people think you're an idiot.

Well, that and the fact that you're an idiot.

Sell 1 of 2 of our most influential and consistent first teamers? Get shut of half of the best midfield duo in the Premiership?

Your answer to squad improvement is to sell one of our best players in an important area to strengthen other areas?

I can see that logic is not one of your strong points...

Absolutley. The guy is class and is one of our best players. If we want to move forward you do NOT sell your best players.

I think this story is just BS to get rumors going. Rafa already said the other week he wants him to stay and pretty soon im sure he will sign a contract extention.

Rafa may well decide to bring in someone else in addition, Barry for example who can fill a number of positions BUT if Rafa gets rid of Alonso that will be a mistake.

Rafa likes this 4-2-3-1 system and Mash and Alonso as the 2 have been brilliant this season. No reason to upset that balance.
