Emilio Butragueño: "It was about time to see Xabi Alonso in the starting eleven, every time he entered the team in the second half increased the level of our football a lot, he's got loads of quality".
So far 0-2 in Estonia, and Alonso and Torres are the Liverpool players that have started. I just hope the 5 of them come back with no injuries.

You can say that Alonso wasn't at his best, but playing poorly? Come off it

Who was playing wide left when Alonso was on form and who was playing there when he was off form?
Not purely laying the blame on other players here, just asking a question.
I remember a similar arguement a few years ago about how bad Sami was playing, when the fact was it was Traore making him look bad, he then regained form when that useless puff was sold. Also, Alonso and Gerrard both play at there best when they have one another to bounce off and play as a pairing. The other pairings don't bring the same fluidity to our play.
I like Mascherano, he's probably the slightly better player of the two (not by much) but the balance is better with Alonso and Gerrard. Simple as that.
Its a team game.

His standards slipped, he clearly lacked form in comparrison to his first 18 months and did look a shadow of the player
Alonso was playing so bad he was dropped and Lucas got his starting position. Alonso was playing so bad Rafa wanted to sell him. He was playing so badly that Gerrard started singing Barry's praises. Enough facts or do you want more?

Was it like that? I ask with all ingenuousness, because I haven't checked on google or past posts.
The way I recall it (correct me if I'm wrong), in Lucas playing instead of Alonso, there was involved an Alonso injury. Then Lucas played well and Alonso came back from that injury below his best, and didn't recover the starting eleven position inmediatly. But the way I remember it wasn't as if Alonso was playing really badly and he was dropped.
Also I would love to know how explained Rafa to Alonso why he considered selling him for a very good price. Unless I've missed something I don't know if it's because Rafa needed badly another player or because Rafa was unpleased with Alonso's football.

To be honest I think you are both being pathetic and pedantic about the whole thing. Now you are quibbling about why Rafa wanted to sell him, when the truth is IF he had been at his best Rafa wouldn't have entertained selling him!
