Barry and Gerrard played good together, maybe thats another needed partnership in the spine of the team.

As I have suggested in the rumour forum, the dollar & the pound are really cr@p at the momment and I mean really bad something like 1 euro 20 to the pound.

This will have a huge impact in this transfer window not only for us but for most teams.
There is only really Chelsea that it wont bother, plus this home grown player quota could also be a reason as good english players value will sky rocket next season due to this ruling.

I dont know the reason behind this transfer as I really though Rafa held Xabi as a very close friend aswell as his player.

Either way after barrys comments on Sky last night it looks like we have left an offer on the table and we are just waiting for Villa to accept it.

One things for sure Alonso will NOT be running out at Anfield next season, even if he doesnt sign for Juve he wont be back here. :(

Given the choice I would much rather have Barry than Xabi, he was not the same player last season and we already have too many central midfielders, its good wingers that we need.
I fail to understand why everyone is so sad to see Xabi leave it's life people, plus most football clubs have to sell before they can buy, where else do you imagine all the money comes from, some people on here live in cloud f%&king cuckoo land when it concerns money for transfers!

Liverpool star Xabi Alonso off to Juventus for £16m
By David Maddock  29/05/2008
Daily Mirror

Xabi Alonso is on the verge of joining Juventus for £16m after five hours of talks in Turin last night.
The Liverpool midfielder's agent Inaki Ibanez travelled to Italy to negotiate and agreed in principle a four-year contract.
"We can't deny our interest," said Juve president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli. "But it's important that we get value for money." The only sticking point is Liverpool's £16m asking price for the Spanish international, bought from Real Sociedad for £10m four years ago as manager Rafa Benitez's first signing.
Juventus protest they want to go no higher than £12m, otherwise they will turn to Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani.

But that is unlikely, because there is a will at Anfield to get the transfer done, then allow Benitez to concentrate his efforts - and funds - on bringing Gareth Barry to Anfield from Aston Villa.
Alonso expects a deal to be reached by the end of the week, and he wants the transfer to Italy completed before his Euro 2008 campaign with Spain gets underway.
Swiss international right back Philipp Degen has agreed a free transfer move to Liverpool and said: "My style will suit the Premier League, where the football is played moving forward.
"But it's clear to me it won't be easy to get in the team."

Incredible range of passing and control, but look at how much time and space he had. When was the last time Alonso was free so often?

his decision making in that clip is appalling. look how many times he passes the ball to nunez.

“I have a clear idea, namely Liverpool would like to sell. But we must first speak with Rafa Benitez.

Not that I like Hicks more than you do Ciggy, but I think Ibañez and Xabi knows perfectly well this transfer will be with the aproval of Benitez.

Sadly Sabre I think your right and I think I know the reason why, his cards seemed marked when he didnt travel to milan and stayed at home for the birth of the baby.

Rafa wasnt pleased atall.

Its a shame if this is the reason why he is being kicked out.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso has not given up on his Liverpool career despite his agent holding talks with Juventus who are keen to take the Reds midfielder to Italy.

Representatives of the Serie A giants have already met with Benitez but no fee has been agreed.

But Alonso’s agent, Inaki Ibanez, is now convinced that Liverpool are ready to sell at the right price and has held preliminary talks with Juventus officials to find out what they are willing to offer his player.

He said: “I have a clear idea, namely Liverpool would like to sell. But first we must speak with Rafa Benitez.

“We’ll decide after the European Championships.”

Alonso is settled in Liverpool with his wife and baby son and will only look to leave if it becomes clear that he has no future at the club.

Perhaps that was the the straw that broke the camels back (I think you say), but probably the situation started earlier than that, when Rafa said Alonso had to gear up, and a gutted Alonso said to some mates of mine that he didn't know what was going on, that he was training harder than ever, yet out of the team.

Alonso's I want to talk Rafa first, sounds like "He's gonna hear me a couple of things". Alonso must be gutted now, because I know that he would have liked to say goodbye to his fans in Anfield, that sort of thing is important where he's from.

Anyway, feelings aside, football wise, in Rafa I trust. I hope that money will be used for a quality winger, and no more "options" and "possibilities" in the middle.

if we don't add anything in the middle, and if Javi goes to China, at the start of the season it will be Plessis and Gerrard starting with either Jay Spearing or Danny Guthrie on the bench.

There lies the problem Joe, if you sell Xabi then those transfer funds are going to have buy another option in the middle. Centre mid merry go around, while the swings out on the wings go rusty

Looks like he is on his way out! shame really, quality player and I think he will regain his form in the new season. I think Rafa will take a big risk by sacrificing Alonso, selling him to Juve and I hope the players we are getting from Alonso's money will be really good players for us.
