From my experiences....

Kissimee,
Villa,
Definately buy tickets first,
Depends what you want (Universal for the thrill, EPCOT at night for fireworks, magic kingdom for the little en. All depends on what you want from them,
Cape Canavral, even better if there's a shuttle leaving while your there. Be warned they are big events so if you want to get anywhere near there, you need to be setting off probably before 7. We left 2 hours before take off, and only managed 20miles in two hours.
2 weeks in Orlando if you want to do all the disney theme parks, plus a lil bit extra.
Erm....there is places al along the main road through orlando. There's also a restaurant, and atm i can't think for the life of me where it is, that's in one of the theme parks, all the disney characters are there, the whole restaurant spins.
As for shopping, there's a huge WALMART, 10 mins from Kissimee.
Just a little help, SS will obviously b more of a help Cig.

No matter, leaving later still gives you a good chance to be in position after they scrub the launch for the thousandth time and reschedule for two days later. :D

(Anyone have a good explanation as to why NASA launches shuttles in a place with so much active weather when they've got vast swathes of western desert to work with?)

Its a while since I last went Ciggy, but the best theme parks were Universal 1 & 2 and the Magic Kingdom. Busch gardens is worth a visit but its a fair way to travel.

Make sure you get to the beaches, St Pete's and Treasure Island are the best (gorgeous white sand) . Cocoa and Satelite beach are ok if you visiting the space centre.(worth a visit just don't pay for the tour as everything you want to see is free)

I have always stayed on International Drive, its right next to I4 so travelling about is no problem. Kissimee looked a bit of a dive (sorry to those that stayed there ) At the top of International Drive there is a Mall where no doubt you will spend some time and not a little money, but the Florida Mall is cheaper and imo has more to do.

At the back of the Quality inn (about 200yds)there is a huge Walmart and a Supermarket, its also the way to Universal studios)

I would get your tickets once you arrive, as we got ours at really good prices over there, just watch out for the timeshare(if they are still active?)sellers.

Make sure you visit the sports shops, everything was cheap as chips.

I never tried a villa, but if I go back maybe I will, but the Hotels are quite nice for the price, much cheaper if you book once you land, but that is a gamble I only took after my third or 4th time there.

Best tip I can give you is get a BIG CAR at least one size up from what you think you will need.

My other tip would be go at Christmas or March/ April time, but thats cos I hate the heat and its just right for me around then. If you like the heat you should be ok in the summer.

I am not sure if Planet Hollywood is still going, but I was there for the opening of it and it was a nice place for a visit, with a nice relaxing walk through the Disney complex (forgotten the name of it)

The theme parks really tire you out so try to get a quiet day in now and then (beach, shopping, Disney complex etc .)

Was about to do a last minute florida trip, been told the missus needs to apply for a visa as she doesn't have a biometric passport, so florida's out the window for now.

Just booked a flights to Sicily instead, anybody familiar with Catania and Syracuse ? .

i was in clearwater near tampa for a conference once and had a free afternoon before flying home. bored out of my mind i put my best cynical head on and decided to jump on a tourists' dolphin spotting boat trip. it was feckin ace, as it happens - even though i burnt myself to a crisp.

Syracuse, yes. It was a long time ago, though.
