Cole was always a central midfielder until Mourinho converted him, he could slot in in front of Mash and in and around Stevie. He'd score goals, make goals and get you untold free kicks around the box (not by diving necessarily, because he's tricky and can dribble). Top player, acclimatised, something to prove and the right age.

14-17 million, Joe Cole, come on down.

Mick i dont think Joe Cole is a realistic target.. Chelsea just said hes not for sale and they actually offered him and Ashley Cole new contracts from what i hear.. 100K a week, dont think he'll be refusing that contract...

As for the other names being thrown around.. Cattermole to me would be a huge step backwards.. if we thought Alonso didnt do much going forward wi dont know what we'll be saying about cattermole.. simple No for me there.. Same with Poulsen who i never thought was anywhere near as good as made out.. ffs even the Juve fans didnt want him to sign and as things turned out they were right.. the guy has been awful for them, if we're really in for him i think hes seen as backup but nothing more...
The Belgian kid Defour iv only seen play twice so i dont know anything about him, hear hes a good player but i have my reservations..

Still think Aquilani is the pick of the bunch and fits our system brilliantly.. Sneijder is more an attacking midfielder who moves around way more than a traditional CM would so i dont know if hed be any good in the position we (I) would expect him to play.. defensively he isnt that good and he shows his best higher up the pitch than where you'd expect him to be getting on the ball for Liverpool..

Pirlo at 30 years old still has about 2-3 years left in him i feel... he doesnt move around much but if there was ever a ready made replacement for Alonso, then its this guy... Chelsea are after him for around 12mill which isnt that much when put in perspective...

EDIT: agree that Poulsen is too defensive and if anything hed be backup for Mascherano the same way Cattermole/Parker would if they came here i feel...

Riccardo Montolivo- This guy has impressed me every time I watched Fiorentina.  He is really good at just about everything, passing, shooting, dribbling.  I am actually surprised that he is not well know outside of Italy.  He's really talented and I think that he just needs to move to a bigger club like Liverpool to really flourish.

I know that youtube videos can be deceiving, but this one really shows how good he is.

Get him off the bitters..would be our best signing in ages!! :p

Overrated and is not exaclty a replacement for xabi . His strengths lie in his set peices in which we already have the best gerrard . Honestly i'd rather we go for totally different option and spend the whole 30 million + dossena + installements equating to 45 million for david villa and throw stevie back to midfield.

I would have to agree - admittedly Gerrard and Torres were great last year, but Gerrard supporting Torres and Villa in attack?

It's a win win to me.

That's defo something to ponder - Villa and Torres with Gerrard back in midfield.

Villa would be about £35M at least tho - I dont think we will splash that much.

I'd rather spend the extra £5M (although, i've heard the Xabi deal is actually worth £34M, based on games played and success - if so, we've done brilliantly), knowing 100% we are buying top, top quality instead of spending £10-£15M on a risk (including Sneijder) and paying another £3-£4M on youngsters / potential.

As Sabre has said, we are at a crucial stage in who we sign next - not just with the player we buy, but the ramifications it could have on our title charge next year. Get Villa, and we create a team that will win the league next year, no doubt in my mind.

To quote Ciggy, we would create a "weapon of mass destruction."  :D

i agree i think joe cole is a great player but didn't chelsea say joe cole isn't for sale? although it seems he will be playing second fiddle at chelsea next season with their midfield

I would love him to play for us, always liked him as a player. It would be a miracle nevertheless if Chelsea would sell him. Certainly not for us, anyway.

Montolivio is a good player .. Was better 2 seasons ago than he was last year but more to do with Melo dictating everything for Fiorentina this season than him not having a good campaign.. Think we really missed out on Melo who would have made a great addition to our side .... still a good shout though but same as Sneijder for me, dont know if he'll fit our system with what the club needs or not...

Interesting.... heard him mentioned a few times, haven't seen him myself though.

I would defo avoid Italian midfielders meself; might make an exception for Pirlo though.

I'm not really "hijacking" it mate  :D I mentioned Cole the other day and actually credited my "source" as nanny as I thought she was the one who first mrntioned him (Apologies to RIW if I was wrong). I'd actually forgot the little fecker existed until about two weeks ago when someone mentioned him, so no hijack from meon this occasion. What I have done quite sneakily however is convert him back to being a central midfielder in order to give the whoel thing a slant of originality, guilty as charged on that one :D.

If Cole's not available, Fabregas. 30 million quid minimum, but an absolute cast iron certainty to fit into the vacant slot. infact, we could do a lot worse than base our search on finding a player who plays a bit like Fabregas. If we had him would we win the league? Yes.

If you want somebody cheaper, Jermaine Jenas. Box to box, arrives and attacks it and is a better player than he looks, 10-12 million.

Want another cheaper option? Nico Kranjaar from pompey. Really nice footballer this lad who would chip in wiuth a few goals. 12-14 million quid, and he'd walk to Anfield. He could stick either Sol Campbell or Distin in the car with him on the way up too.
