following the great feedback from the best album thread (and i will listen to many of the albums referred to) a best film thread is reasonable.

if you define greatness by popularity or sales then gone with the wind, the godfather, scarface,shawshank,E.T etc

I am currently watching memento which I love as it makes you think (the film goes backwards) , pulp fiction, theres something about mary (i know slapstick comedy always gets slaughtered by critics), scarface (yeah, I know) , the usual suspects, chinatown (the ending a bit karaoke though) .

metropolis and king kong are obvious contenders for fans of older films.

Something similar was done was, Most watched film I think it was as well as in the movie thread with what woof started.

Millers Crossing, Apocolypse Now, Truman Show, Rocky and of course Shawshank!

comedies have to be Scrooged, Happy Gilmore, Blues Brothers and Big Lebwoski

cant go wrong with Goodfella's, its a bit typical i know, but ive seen it about 100 times and no pratically all the lines and i still enjoy it every time i watch it

Depends what you are after.

I'm bang into my comedy films at present. Went to watch that Role Models and thought it was funny as feck.

Also Old School with Frank The Tank is ace.

But favourite films also include...

Rocky IV
Goodfellas
Shawshank
The Power of One
The Pianist

apocalypse now was not a good film!!!
I am gonna write a big piece for this thread, about what makes a good film, a great film etc

the other thing is best made, or favourite? I love the Lost boys and Goonies, but it's not the greatest made film ever, just a eprsonal fave... so for now, a top 5 in my current mood:

The Godfather (part 1 obviously)
I'm a cyborg but thats ok
Donnie Darko
The Warriors
Safety Last - Greatest Harold Lloyd comedy ever

will have a nice bigmick sized dissitation on the art of a great movie later for you lucky people lol

The Power of One is a cracking movie mate, I absolutely loved that film as a teenager. The book 'Power of One' by Bryce Courtney is even better and well worth a read mate + he wrote a followup called 'Tandia'.

Impossible to identify a number one movie but I can throw 6-7 straight off the top of my head;

- Shawshank Redemption (watched it again on the box the the night, it's one of the all-time greats)

- Empire Strikes Back (by far the best of the bunch)

- Point Break (The consumate action movie, guns, sun, surf and Lori Petty, what more do ya need!)

- Human Traffic (Don't think i've ever identified with a movie as much as this one)

- The Terminator (What a fu.c..k.in movie! Seriously dark, Arnie's best ever role)

- Meet the Parents (Tough to pick out a comedy, so many get funnier and funnier as you watch them over an over. In terms of first-time laughter i don't think a film has broken me as much as this classic)

- Platoon (The best war movie ever made, a master-piece)

Looking forward to hearing why Apocalypse Now isn't a good film mate.

And why Part 1 obviously?

Ive seen both about 20 times, Godfather 2 is a supreme piece of cinematography..

The Lives of Others is probably one of the best storylines Ive ever watched.

Cant recommend it highly enough.

Apocalypse now... what do people remember about it?
It's actualyl an ok film until Brando comes into it then it just turns into a mess in my humble opinion. Any film where the making of is more famous than the film itself is telling you something.
Of course what I said in previous post is just rubbish, films are subjective and it's almost impossible to say one film is better than another.

Godfather part 1 for me though just does it all. You see the growth of Michale Corleone and arlon Brando prooved why at the time he was a complete genius.

Could someone proove though that Godfather is better than Dumb and dumber? It's apples and lamb, two completely different entities.

how can you not like Apocolypse Now? So Brando didnt want to be filmed in full light because he'd ate all the pies - I think it works because of the way the character has reached mythical proportions by the time we finally have the face off.. The only thing I hate about the movie is Dennis Hopper and his hippy reporter.
