Free kicks

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby kindaconfuzed » Thu Aug 26, 2004 7:44 am

I gotta say I love Risse but find it frustrating when he's allowed to run 15 yards to take a free kick. The wall is generally only 8 yards away and it moves as soon as the player starts to run so the odds are stacked against them.

I know he sometimes scors but in the percentage game how does it make sense. Does anyone have an explanation?

Thats a fairly reasonable explanation.  Alonso supposed to be able to take free kicks though so maybe we'll see a change.

so far haven't found the one who has the ability to score on more regular basis. Our best free kick taker so far (including since evans, houllier) was Danny Murphy.

i think i'm right in thinking that last season we didn't score a single goal direct from a free kick. i think this was because our free kicks became so predictable. murphy wasn't in the side regularly so we either had riise, hamann or gerrard who would nine times out of ten hit the wall. hopefully this season with garcia, alonso and even cisse, we will have more options.

options are the key because it keeps the opposing keeper guessing. imagine being a keeper against real madrid with zidane relegated to fourth choice behind beckham, roberto carlos and figo. :D

optioning can only applicable if we have more than one good freeshooter. If we had someone like (i hate to say it) Beckham, we should only focus on him (well, maybe to shoot at least more than 60% freekicks). Liverpool didn't have a special taker (always changing) because none of us is a quality taker.

we havn't had any real dead ball experts since Gary Mac. I can remember several key games that his precision crosses or accurate direct free kicks, bailed us out the sh*te. we need to find someone in the current squad who can do the same. I think Riise's boomers should be a change up to a more delicate style of free kick, rather than our standard idea of letting him belt anything in range :)

gary mac was a dead ball genius. he could put a corner on a sixpence 99 times out of a hundred! not bad at free kicks either. :D

"mcallister takes it. oh yes! what a goal by gary mcallister!"

This rubbish about Riise though, come on hey people.

I know that the Kop sing that ooh aah song about him, but the lad has not scored a free kick since the one at Anfield against Man Utd that sparked the singing of those lyrics.

The thing that gets me about it is, can the lad not hit a dead ball ? Why does it always have to be moving?

Probably cuz they were indirect.
Smith to Shankly:My thigh is a bit sore, but I think I could play.
Shankly to Fagan:Tell him,Joe.He has got no chance of playing.
Smith to Fagan:Tell him to sod off.It is not his leg,it's mine.
Shankly to Smith:Oh no son.You are wrong, son. It is not your leg.
It is Liverpool Football Club's leg.

Emlyn Hughes, Jan Molby and John Barnes tok great free kicks.  Does anyone else deserve a mention ?  Like Riise, Hughes liked the ball to be moving before he struck.

Yes, Jan Molby was a dead ball master.  I do remember Steve Nicol strike a rare freekick in the top corner, that season he scored loads of goals.
