if thats what it was, then Geylang has taken over now. Bugis is a very hip shopping district where loads of teens frequent now. i didnt know about the origin of that expression though. i tried googling the meaning of Bugis but came up with nothing. as for trannies, Chnagi is the place to go.

I always thought the boogyman came from when Napoleon Bonaparte was threatening to invade Britain?  The Boneyman is going to get you , gradually became boogyman.

1) In Southeast Asia the term is commonly accepted to refer to Bugis [4] or Buganese [5] pirates, ruthless seafarers of southern Sulawesi, Indonesia's third largest island. These pirates often plagued early English or Dutch trading ships, namely those of the British East India Company or Dutch East India Company. It is popularly believed that this resulted in the European sailors bringing their fear of the "bugi men" back to their home countries. However, etymologists disagree with this because words relating to bogeyman have been commonly used centuries before European colonisation of Southeast Asia and it is therefore unlikely that the Bugis would have been commonly known to westerners during that time. Another theory is that in 17th century England which at the time was plagued by slave traders raiding the coasts of Devon and Cornwall by Barbary pirates, from which one of the ports they sailed from was Boujaya (French Bougie) in present day Algeria. Hence the phrase 'The Boogey man will get you'.

2) The bogeyman, boogyman, bogyman, boogieman, boogey monster, or boogeyman, is a folkloric or legendary ghostlike monster often believed in by children. The bogeyman has no specific appearance, and conceptions of the monster can vary drastically even from household to household within the same community; in many cases he simply has no set appearance in the mind of a child, but is just an amorphous embodiment of terror. Bogeyman can be used metaphorically to denote a person or thing of which someone has an irrational fear. Parents often say that if their child is naughty, the bogeyman will get them, in an effort to make them behave. The bogeyman legend may originate from Scotland, where such creatures are sometimes called bogles, boggarts, or bogies.

:D hey you've been here in Singapore right? believe it or not...Geylang is still a crackhouse and a whorehouse. its like.....the police KNOW about it but nothing seems to be done about it. but Bugis is now a rather popular shopping district. im not sure what it was before.

The thing is prostitution is legal here and there are places people can go if they want to well release their stress :D . Some whorehouse's have licenses thus the police don't really do much raids there . If i'm not wrong bugis was where gays's , transexuals used to meet  :D

prostitution is legal in singapore? since when!? how come no one told me. oh dear! poor move by the government. i dont see how they benefit from it. its not like they get some from of commission from every hole that is filled. and besides, its simply congests the already congested little island. they should be sent back to wherever they came from. sent back the ugly ones and the infected ones too.

I'm not sure since when , maybe 10 or so years back . There's no benefits to the governement except that maybe it lowers crime rate . Singapore has many foriegn workers , if they don't have a place to release stress , they start rapping the locals , something like this happened not too long back , girl was raped by foriegn workers and killed , worst thing killers were never found . So by allowing it , it not only ensure that our crime rate is down but also the locals especially the girls will be safer  :D

As for infections , i do know that prostitutes that belong to those legal "houses" are given free STD test every sunday to ensure that they are not infected , if they are , they are sent back . Those girls that do not belong to any houses , they are the ones to be wary off , they might carry all sort's of diseases and they are also doing it illegally .

Areas where i think prostituion is legal , Geylang , Orchard Towers  The rest all i think are illegal , such as Duxton where the authorties have done many raids and caught many filipino's and Deskar Road As well . Changi is legal for Transexuals
