The oyster card is valid for all tubes and buses, don't know how long you plan to stay , probably best to ask for the pre-pay as opposed to the "weekly" . Pre-pay means you bung as much money as you think you'll need onto the card, bus journeys cost about £1, tubes vary on the length of the journey.

So made up are they that somebody actually wants to pay as opposed to vaulting over the barriers in their puffa jackets (they wear these regardles of the temperature) that from what I remember they're always willing to accomodate you. Failing that just get a one day travelcard which covers you for the bus and all that as well. Don't also forget that the tube mab bares no resemblence to the actual scale of London which is quite small in the centre. Print yourself off a couple of maps off the net and you'll find that rather than going up and down escalators and queueing up on platforms, you're often better off just walking. You really can walk from Covent Garden, through Leicester Square and onto Piccadilly circus in about three minutes (I might be slightly stretching it but it's not much longer) and you get to see a whole lot more things that you do on the tube.
how much does the shortest journey, i.e. the cheapest possible fare, on the tube cost these days, out of interest?
