Hello, just popping in from sunny benidorm. On a stag do with 40 odd lads for the weekend. Good fun.

Its quite suprising that the Spanish round here are not still celebrating the Euro win, havent seen anything mentioned with it.

The little restaurant lad is sound though, he can´t speak English but everytime I go down for dinner, he names a Liverpool player´- Torres, Xabi, Reina.

On a bit of a harsher note, the Spanish here seem to :censored:

hate us. I hope its only this part of Spain Sabre mate!!

Maybe it's because for the past 20 years yobo's from forgotten corners of the UK have turned Benidorm into yer usual Saturday vomit and fight night in an English town center. ?

(not saying you're one of the yobs Rafa , but I'm sure you saw enough to get my drift)

There's something of that but in the case of Benidorm is the fact that they've built far too many hotels and apartments destroying many local commerce, and shore line.

Benidorm was a way to make money for 20 years, not in the long term. Quite simply because when Spain gets richer, the english will find croatia's coasts more cheap and more calm. So the true locals of Benidorm have that understandable frustration of seeing their surroundings totally "destroyed" while they see in the long term that will bring them no money if not massive unemployment.

As for the Spaniards as a whole I wouldn't say these days the English are hated. If you ask a >55 year old man probably he will, because he was educated to hate Albion, as the old regime dreamt of recovering that imperial Spain, and England was the traditional rival -- Gibraltar and the stuff.

But among the <55 year old I'd say that respect is more predominant, and England is a target for many students who want to know both the country and the language. In fact, while we have despective names for French and other neighbours, the English do not have such a name.

aaron in spain the night they won the euros. watched the first half in Benidorm in the Liverpool Arms then fecked off back to Altea to our hotel Benidorm was like being in Matthew street on a saturday night, full of p!ssed up hens and stags fighting and spewing up in the streets

Spaniards where mad here driving through the fountain on motorbikes on the roundabout how no one died I will never know.

If they smell you're from another town, they'll make the journey longer.

If you're foreigner, even worse.

Since you go to Spain often Ciggy, bear those words in mind:

"Quiero la hoja de reclamaciones" (I want the complaint sheet)

That book of complaints is something every bar, pub, taxi or otherwise will have. If you write in it, they cannot just break that sheet because they're numbered. Then inspectors read those complains. Normally if you feel you're being robbed and you threaten him with "Quiero hoja de reclamaciones" they'll try to reach an agreement.
