This image is misleading.

What really is happening here is that the dude taking it on the gob is actually chewing on a jumbo baseball bat shaped frankfurter with no arms. He lost those in Nam. Everyone else is just striking their best dramatic pose for the Broadway musical they are auditioning for.

In the top right corner you can see that someone was trying to catch the bat (would have been impossible given the way that bats at that speed fly, their trajectory is all effed up. But still he is only a couple of inches too high or else he could have saved the day. I think it would have been funnier if his hand was in the right place and then he moved it up at the last second and let it hit that dude in the face

Well it is 21st Century, if he had protected the kid then he may have been sued for discriminating against the baby and displaying chauvistic tendencies in trying to protect the child
