Wenger knew he wasn't good enough for Aresnal, Birmingham is his level.

cant agree with that, Wenger never once said than Pennant wasnt good enough, and most Arsenal fans though he was a good player. He was shipped out because of his lack of discipline and bad behaviour. That probably saved his career because at Birmingham he was forced improve his of the feild antics.

At Liverpool i think he has shown that he is capable of playing at this level, he will never be world class, but he is a good winger and provides goals and a genunie threat down the right side.

It's a long season and he'll be needed at some point - guaranteed.

Benayoun is in good form and Pennant would struggle to displace him at present.  But I also guarantee that at some point Benayoun's form will dip and we'll probably get the odd injury to our other wide players over the course of the season that will let Pennant back in.  Not to mention rotation of course!

Pennant will never be top class, quite simply because he doesn't have a goal in him, but he's a good player and if he's patient he can still be important for us.

Ace Ventura wrote:Cant see what the worry is ciggy tbh, yes he might not get straight into the team and if i was to pick between the two (Pennant & Yossi) i would go for Benayoun most of the time due to his better final ball and the fact that he is a goal threat.
But Jermaine scares the life out of full backs at times and even if he doesnt start would be a very useful substitute.
We all know Rafa loves different options or possibilities  :D  so i forsee both being used just as often, obviously depending on the opposition.

I agree this. To be fair to Pennant, even Alonso hasn't been missed in the last weeks, reason of that being we have a squad deep enough now. Other seasons, Pennant's injury would have meant Gerrard in the Right, but now it's not a must any more, just another option.

It's great news that if men like Pennant, Alonso or Mascherano or Agger are injured the squad is responding. It's great news, and a fact. FWIW, and I know this might irk, even if Gerrard is injured 3 weeks the squad could respond well.

he's due back on 2nd january so it would be good to see him get a runout in the FA cup.

Any team with ambitions of winning the premiership must have wingers who can score.  Ronaldo's goals were integral to Uniteds success last year.  Robben was scoring regularly when Chelsea were winning the league.  Pires and Jungberg scored plenty goals for Arsenal from wide positions.  Pennant doesn't chip in with goals and hes not good enough.  If he was Wenger would never have sold him.

I just don't think he is good enough to wear a red shirt, and i mean a wrexham one at that!!!!!!!

while some people have warmed to him i just can't see past the pack of pace or inventiveness from an OUT AND OUT winger, he regularly puts the ball in the box with even looking for a target, he never looks to beat the man and shoot,

and i know every player takes time to win over the fans (harry kewell took a while to convice me he wasn't just here for the money)

he is a poor mans mark walters, poor in every department of his job, i would have bentley from blackburn over him in a heart beat

or a swap deal for arteta from the bitters or lesscott

i wouldn't be sorry if i never saw him play in the lfc first team ever again he is not good enough and know matter how hard he works you can't polish a terd

:D

I just don't think JP has what it takes to be a class winger. We have to look to our main rivals and compare what we have to them I mean united's Ronaldo (as much as  I really really hate him) is class. Chelski has wright-phillips. He needs to score a lot more and he he just is not hungry enough. He has pace yet he doesn't beat players. I mean he is quicker than kewell and even benayoun yet he can't go around men. And at crosses he is so-so. We ahould definately look to snap up arteta IMO or just hang on to benayoun rotating babel. JP has had two years to stamp his name all over the right position yet can anyone say that he is sorely missed?

Well he costs a lot lower than all 3 players you have mentioned...

You know my take...get rid of pennant but we need to bring in someone better than him...

Pennant was our 3rd or 4th best player last season, had a great pre-season and was playing better than others so far this season. and right after his injury we struggled for a couple games, and dearly missed him when he was suspended for Marseille at home.  Where are Yossi's crosses from the right wing since he has replaced him?  Not to take a shot at him, because he is a different player, but Pennant is our best crosser from the right and has even shown some nice flashes of being able to cut inside and deliver a ball if he finds himself on the left.  And he has had big games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Milan.

Not worried Ace just wanted peoples opinions as what the future holds for Pennant as I dont feel he has been missed.

I tend to agree, however we can't keep changing the personnel on either flank. Is this the one problem Rafa has failed to cure properly?

GK - sorted, Reina is quality
CBs - not always a problem but Agger and Carra work well
LB - been a problem, Arbeloa looks capable there
RB - Finnan has shown good form
CM - apart from a fetish for Sissoko and DMs this area of the pitch has plenty of good players
CF - Torres is da best, not sure about da rest

So maybe the strikers and wide midfield need addressing, no doubt Rafa will sign another young prospect for CM or DM or anywhere but where needed
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

why was Pennant played today? and to start also? don't they usually start players who just came back from injury on the bench?
