1981/82
Started the season as Euro Champs again. Three times in just over 4 years. In all fairness we were that good, it was getting embarrassing to all those around us. Never was it more difficult to find a footy debate in an ale house.
We not only expected the league title now, we were curious what would come with it.
Arrogant ? Perhaps, but we were that good.
The title followed and was coupled with the FA Cup (yawn)
We signed a young lad from Chester this year.
He’ll never make the grade, too light. Tall skinny and a nose like Pinocchio.
Not in the least Striker like in appearance.
I forecast he’ll be a flop
2) 1982/83
Ronnie Whelan, Yeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssss !!!!
King Kenny was scoring goals for fun this season, and his young apprentice aint as bad as I originally thought. But he’s still not going to make it.
Game of the season is a difficult one.
Erm erm erm ?
Ok I’ll settle for the 5-0 victory over the Bitters at Woodison
That fellah I said was going to be Great, yer know RUSH, scored 4 out of five.
I always knew he would be a cracker, yer must have remembered me telling you last season, surely.
I kid you not the title was becoming boring.
It was just as well we played in other comps, although winning the League cup now for the last two years was becoming tiresome.
Having to travel to Wembley every year is not funny !
No I kid yer not, it’s getting ruddy expensive going down there every year and sometimes twice. At least we have half decent oppo’s this year.
We just love playing the mancs at Home (Anfield South)
Two draws in the league were followed by another after 90 mins at Wembley.
And then it happened, Whelan shoots, it rebounds back to him.
He appeared to lean backwards and what seemed like a cross, bent and bent a bit more and into the postage stamp it disappeared.
Ronnie Whelan, Yeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssss !!!!
3) 1983/84
If we win the title this year it will be three years on the trot.
Honestly it’s gettin boring. But what an achievement it would be. A Hat-trick of League titles. If we pull this off I think we’ll celebrate.
Remember that lad, you know, the one I said would be an all time great, surely you remember. Rush !
He scored FIVE in a league game this year against Luton.
Where was I?
We won the league, but that cant be much of a surprise.
Winning the League Cup for the fourth time on the trot wont surprise many, even though it did go to a replay.
With it being against local rivals Everton, it was made all the sweeter, when Souey nailed the winner.
This years win against Roma in their own back yard left me with mixed feelings.
Ok we had won the European cup FIVE times, but the up and coming departure of Graeme Souness was the end of an era.
4) 1985/86
John Wark had made a great start at Anfield last year and his 26 goals in his first year was sadly to result in us winning nothing.
Beaten by the mancs in the FA and the tragedy of Heysell left us blank and a ban from Europe sickened us all.
Our 11th title was won at a time most of us were in the doldrums.
Title secured, we were cheered up by the win against the toffee’s at Wembley after we had given them a goal start.
The highlight this season was the emergence of Big Jan Molby, he was massive in every sense of the word.
After watching the masters recently I swear he’s actually lost weight.
5) 1987/88
Four became the magic number this year.
We scored 4 against
Coventry Newcastle Derby Portsmouth QPR Watford Newcastle (again) Coventry (again) Watford (again) & Manchester City
And 5 against Forest and Sheff Wed.
Not bad considering Rush the boy wonder had left.
The season finished with defeat against the Wombles.
Probably the hardest pill ever to swallow, in my entire career of watching the Redmen.
6) 1989/90
Every heart was lifted when Rush returned from his exile in Italy.
With a striker of his quality playing up front with Beardsley and Barnes must have indeed been a “Rush”
The title was already in our pocket when we travelled to Coventry for the final game.
How good was it to end the season with a 6-1 away win.
We entered the 90’s full of hope.
With King Kenny at the helm, what could possibly go wrong ?
Anyone who started watching Liverpool in 1991 will probably be able to answer that, far better than me.
Some may criticise this comment, but believe me when I say, Liverpool have never been the same side since not having a Souness type player on the park.
Smith was good and ruddy hard to boot, there was no equal to Tommy in his heyday, even Dave Mackay couldn’t argue with that.
Steve McMahon has come the closest to matching Tommy.
But NO ONE has ever filled Souey’s Boots !
This year we have a new manager at the helm and the outlook looks promising.
Cisse could be on the verge of terrifying premiership defences, as Rushy once did.
Kirkland, if he fulfils his potential, could be the new Ray Clemence.
But Stevie G has an awful long way to go before he encroaches on the greatness of Souness.
Step up to the plate Stevie, lets see what your truly made of.
