Zinedine Zidane!!

How many times have you seen him live? do you go to the game?

On a serious note he was utter class. Both Alonso and Zidane can be considered "midfielders" but their games had nothing to do.

Zidane is one of those players that were comfortable where nobody is comfortable, he brushed away a pressing player with an irritating ease.

His set pieces, his touch, his footwork, his range of resources, his long shot,his unpredictability (you never knew what resource he was going to use) and despite some recent attitudes in the pitch, his manners in the pitch, made him special.

Videos of Zidane making a volley should be delivered in all schools to show the lads how placing a body properly is important to kick the ball.

What I loved a lot was the way he has to run with the ball, slightly leaning his body forward, and with the ball always stick to his foot.

It's a shame that his career has been marked in the latter stage by that header in the world cup or 2 or 3 red cards and nasty tackles in a Madrid in crisis, because for what I can tell, his manners in a football pitch had always been good, not a nasty player.

His volley in the 2002 Champions League final was possibly the best volley I've ever seen.

For him to keep the ball on target given the height and pace it came at him was extraordinary.

Him, Van Basten and the utterly unique Maradona were the best three players I've ever seen.

He certainly had it all , frustratingly laid back at times, but a genius of our times. Id even rate him better than the other french maestro-Platini.

Agree brother Alex-him Van the Man and Maradona have stood head and shoulders above the rest. :nod

Nobody - in modern times - could hold a candle to Maradona when he was on song. Maradona was a freak of nature, it was like watching a computer game watching him play.

In 1986, when he was at his peak, I have never seen a player, in any sport, play with such arrogant, brilliant swager.

Agreed, plus Maradona had to suffer the nasty tackles of that times. Maradona suffered more kicks than anyother player in the world, tackles that didn't aim the ball, and that were not punnished as red cards until well in the nineties decade.

He could dish it out a bit too..usually in frustration at the treatment he was getting.
Baresi was his nemesis -followed him anywhere he went like a lil lamb, but tackled like a lion. He wasnt bad either mind you.

I actually remember Ronnie Whelan hit a stunning volley against (Ithink) USSR in the 88' Euro championships ?

That was one of the best volleys I've seen. Zidane's was magic too, and he was a magician himself.

That was one of the best volleys I've seen. Zidane's was magic too, and he was a magician himself.

Whelan's volley was spectacular but there was a fair element of luck to it. Zidane's volley was technically perfect.

Still, at least we can talk about Ronnie and Zidane in the same breath.
