Pre-post pay - Mobiles

Does anyone know anything about mobile phones and pre-post pay?

My mate phoned me with a website where they had made a mistake and you got a pre-post pay virgin phone for FREE so I ordered 4 but now people are telling me that pre-post pay are contract even though the phone price and line rental was FREE.

What do you think?

I think they are just like pay as you go - you have to buy credit ,but you can choose who to buy it off unlike mine which is locked to BT.
