Reds trio forced out of cup date

Rafael Benitez will be without Craig Bellamy (ankle), Fabio Aurelio (groin) and Mark Gonzalez (ankle) for the Carling Cup visit of Reading.

Reds boss Benitez will also rest Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia and Xabi Alonso, with Steve Finnan also likely to sit the match out. England Under-19 goalkeeper David Martin, the son of West Ham legend Alvin, will be understudy to Jose Reina because of Jerzy Dudek's suspension.

Benitez has added three more youngsters to the squad, midfielder Danny Guthrie and full-backs Lee Peltier and Jamie Smith. Harry Kewell remains sidelined, but Robbie Fowler is fit after a back problem and will play on Wednesday.

Liverpool (from): Reina, Peltier, Carragher, Agger, Palleta, Smith, Riise, Luis Garcia, Sissoko, Pennant, Guthrie, Fowler, Crouch, Kuyt, Warnock, Zenden, Martin, Finnan

Due two our misfourtune in the league. Rafa will have to take the carling cup more serious now & as he should. A good cup run will move us up towards the top four, as it was proven in the famous 2000/01 season.

Glad to hear Robbie's in, mixing in some experience is ideal for this game although I think it'll be a very tough game.

From what I saw of Reading last season and this one so far, they take every game very seriously and are always up for a battle.

Should be a good game and I agree that a good cup run can only help our now fragile confidence.

C'mon the lads  :D

Massive bananna skin in a no win situation .

If we win (yes I did say "if" ) it will be no more than most expect . If we lose all hell will break loose , expect the media to bury us while the rest of football laughs .

With this team in mind to play against Aston Villa on Saturday:

                     Reina

Finnan   Carragher   Agger   Aurelio

Gerrard   Alonso     Sissoko  Gonzalez

              Kuyt      Bellamy

I would play this team against Reading:

                Dudek

Hobbs   Paletta   Hyypia   Warnock

Pennant Peltier   Zenden    Riise

           Fowler   Crouch

Subs

El Zhar
Garcia
Anderson
Antwi
Martin

Too be perfectly honest I think we would get more value with a fringe/youth team losing but gaining experience against a Premiership quality team, than winning with a first team, as long as we don’t get destroyed there it will be a good experience.

But that team is decent and its 100% viable to plan for a victory against a Reading side that just got taken apart on Sunday evening. I think our freshness and hunger would see us through to a 2-1 victory and plenty of smiles all round.

We will lose tonight.

And to be honest I am not that arsed. Rafa will play a weakened team with most of our main players rested. I expect Reading to treat this cup seriously and there a stubborn team who I would expect to beat our reserves. At the moment are players are looking tired and lost so I am all in favour of Rafa leaving them out.

However I know for a fact the papers, the pros and a few of you on here with jump on Rafa and all moan and moan and moan but we will lose tonight.

The Team:           Reina

  Peltier       Paletta      Agger     Smith

  Pennant    Guthrie     Zenden    Warnock

            Linfield         Fowler[c]

I read somewhere Rafa said he would use a couple of youngsters, but I personally think he should play a near enough strong team.
