No, we're just humane. It's assualt, you couldn't do that out in the street otherwise you'd be arrested, charged with assualt and sent to prison, why should Thatcher get away with it, just because it happened on a football pitch?

I'm sure if that challenge was commited on one our players, you'd be the first person complaining.

yeah but it happens all the time, it really does, and as stuart pearce rightly said, the police should not get involved otherwise players could be getting arrested in the games for every elbow

You get players who when they jump for the ball often catch players in the face, these are usually accidental incidents, there are of course challenges like the Andy Van Der Meyde challenges which are stupid, but these challenges show some intent to win the ball and some intent to leave a mark on player. This incident or "challenge" regarding Ben Thatcher  and Pedro Mendes, shows no intent to win the ball, just to take Mendes out, and that is why I want to see the book thrown at players like Thatcher.

If the Souness', Niell's and Roy Keane's of football are sent to the slaughter for their rash challenges and dirty style, then I don't see why a Ben Thatcher should escape a slating. His "challenge" is one of the worst I've ever seen and I've been watching the game for years. If I'm not mistaken he did a similar thing to Nicky Summerbee and he punctured a Chinese lad's lung.

This isn't a one off incident, there are three counts of serious assault here and he should be banned from football and sent to prison for it.

You can't assualt someone down your street, and I don't see why it should be one rule for ordinary people and one rule for football players.

Maybe if the F.A and Police make a statement out of Thatcher by chucking the book at him and sending him down, this will calm the Lucas Niell's of this world down.

Its came to light today that Thatcher also ruptured a guys lung in a pre season game..The mans a w@nker,sooner or later he'll meet his match though!

It could be overlooked if his 'tackle' on Mendes was a one off..but as we all know he has a history of this filfth! He's a dirty disgusting talentless player anyway and the game can do without his type.

If he was one of ours i'd be ashamed!

He had no intent of going for the ball, he wanted to take out Mendes and he did a pretty good job, what will it take to stamp this nonsense out? A death, a broken neck, what? Because if Mendes has landed wrongly or the elbow was at a different angle it could of been more serious than a sore neck and a concussion.

If you did something similar to another person outside, down a street, in a park, you would be arrested and charged for it, it's assualt.

And it could of ended Mendes' career, that's how serious the "challenge" was. So no it's not a wind-up.  :no

you lot are saying jail time because a player got a little physical. altho i dont like thatcher so would happily see him locked away, it will ruin the game even more.

football is footbal, the fa and fifa are the police in this sport. let the bobbys do there jobs in the real world (not the thread, the place)

A little physical, WTF :O

He knocked him out, that's not being a little physical, that's blatant thuggery and it should come with a heavy penalty. I'd agree with the statement FIFA, UEFA and EFA are the police if they actually did something, a £250,000 pound fine for City and a three match ban for Ben Thatcher is not a punishment,. it's a joke, I don't want this kind of stuff in football, so I support the Police's decision to involve themselves in this incident.

People get knocked out a lot. just look at the pace of the tackle as well as the thuggery. 250k fine for the club? wtf for?

its a 3 match ban offence. nothing more. but i'll leave this thread now as im obviosuly the only one who thinks this :)

F#ckin hell people get sent off for taking their shirts off yet this guy is allowed to get away with stuff like this. This is taking the pi$$ and the refs need to get their priorities sorted out.

And Dawson, to say what Thatcher did merits the same punishment as what Rooney received for a flailing arm in a friendly is a joke.

People like Paddy Kenny get knocked out for landing wrongly, yes, but to try and excuse this particular incident against other lesser incidents like Andy Van Der Meyde and Wayne Rooney for instance is a joke. I was using the £250,000 fine for Man City and three match ban for Ben Thatcher as an example of what the F.A usually hand out.

It was a disgraceful act and it should be heavily punished. To say otherwise is really shocking.

Dawson you really are talking some :censored:- yes i agree he shouldn't get jail time but he should get a seriously long ban- similar to Cantona's a while ago. To say it was his pace is complete boll.ocks, yes he was legging it across the pitch but at no point did he even shape up in any way to look like he was going to challenge for the ball.

He only had one thing in mind, and because it was on a football field doesn't make it okay- he's pure scum and deserves to be banned for a long time, this way people may think about it a bit and stick to 'tackling' in the future. Whether his head hit the floor or hoarding doesn't matter, it was his elbow that put it there- not his shoulder or chest- his elbow!

Frankly if he'd done that to me i'd make sure he saw the inside of a hospital (once i'd come round that is)!!
