Thatcherism - Bane of society

The Premiership - General Discussion

Ben Thatcher must be given a lengthy ban by the FA,after the horrific assault on Man City player Mendes, last night.Dermot Gallagher's performance and his pathetic previous record should be sufficient to get this useless inbred struck off the referreeing panel indefinitely.

The worst thing is because the referee booked him for it, the FA can make no further implications.

I said it in another thread but i'll say it again, it was one if not the worst thing i have seen on a football field, you could see the intent....and at the speed they were both running Mendes could of had his jaw smashed or his sight damaged.
It was a horrific challenge and merits about a 10 match ban imo.

Thatcher is a disgrace,Iwouldnt let him near a football pitch again.The FAmay still act according to this;

The FA could take action against Ben Thatcher

Football Association officials are looking at their own regulations for punishing players to see if further action can be taken against Ben Thatcher for his crude challenge on Pedro Mendes.

The Manchester City full-back crashed into Mendes in the second half of the goalless draw at Eastlands, with the Portsmouth player spending the night in hospital.

"We are looking at whether this may possibly be an exceptional case and what options may exist under our disciplinary regulations,'' an FA spokesman told PA Sport.

Referee Dermot Gallagher gave Thatcher a yellow card for the challenge, meaning the 30-year-old defender should escape further sanctions under strict disciplinary guidelines.

The tackle, which sent 27-year-old Mendes into the advertising hoardings, was condemned by Pompey boss Harry Redknapp and later by television pundits who examined the forearm challenge.

"The FA have to do something,'' said the Portsmouth manager. "It is there for all to see. I do not want to see anyone suspended but how could that possibly not be a red card? What do you have to do to get a red, kill someone?''

Mendes has left hospital and will travel back to Portsmouth with club officials.

"He will continue to be under medical and neurological supervision during the forthcoming week,'' read a statement on official Portsmouth website pompeyfc.co.uk.

Unbelievable act of violence by Thatcher.I believe the local cops are getting involved and so they should.

The bloke should be utterly ashamed of himself.

why should the police be involved? it was a bad tackle but made worse by the speed they were travelling. u cant bring in police over every bad elbow/tackle.

thatcher deserves a 3 match ban and thats what he'll get but dont blow it all out of proportion people.

That was no tackle.A tackle implies an attempt to win the ball.

It was a pre-meditated act of violence and deserves to be treated as such.

PM, prime minister.
All im saying is that if all you girls (apologies to the girls) cant handle the odd scuffle then you should be watching green bowls. An elbow occured but look at the speed they were at. Get the police involved? You're having a giraffe!!!

football is for men, and sometimes they get hurt. Rememeber terry butcher? Goalies have played with broken necks... now someone gets a lil elbow (not the first elbow in the history of the game) you want a police criminal investigation???

It was a horrific challenge, I dont go with the players with broken necks argument to be honest as that was in the past and many a player has difficulty walking these days because of the attitude in the past.

It was a nuts tackle and he just went to hurt him deliberately and that must have a bigger punishment than normal, although Police involvement is a bit far as it was on the pitch but try telling Duncan Ferguson that

Have you ACTUALLY seen the challenge ? It was not a tackle, it was a pre-meditated barge using his forearm when he knew Mendes would be off balance, it is the worst challenge i have seen in football and if the police get involved then i am all for it.
Dawson i cant believe you think people are going OTT or that you used the word tackle, he also elbowed Kanu earlier in the game, but due to the nigerian being about 6 foot 6, it hit him in the neck.

the worst tackle ever? gimme a break!
They were both going full pelt, and mendes slid into the barriers. yes it was bad but u lot are talking about getting him done for GBH. The world has gone absolutely mad. What about a stomp? should police be involved for that as well? I remember stevie g doing one against everton, maybe he should have got community service for that right?
Rooney in the world cup, he should have got at least a suspended sentance.

It was a bad foul, but its football and this thing happens in every league every day.

3 match ban. nuff said
