Matt, I'm here to help lad!

1) The "walk all over you thing" was a joke based on the first line of the post: "welcome Matt" (think of it as a noun rather than as a greeting)

2) Along the lines of replacing "soccer" with "football" in future discussions of Liverpool, might I also humbly suggest a slight change to your signature.  You see, I don't think anyone around here needs telling that Bill Shankly was a "former-Liverpool FC manager"!  "Shanks" will probably do just fine.  Hate to nitpick but I'm just tryng to save you some grief from some of the more, erm, aggressive members of the forum!

Happy Posting!  :)

Hiya Matt, welcome to the forum... The more Reds in the States the better I say...
Oh, and there's a Point Extra and a Punt in Gridiron (let's not call it American Football anymore eh?) as well as a field goal.
On the subject of American Sports Matt, are you a Cubs or White Sox fan? I follow St. Louis, that's where my name came from.....

I get it now.  I'm a little slow this morning / afternoon.  And the only reeason I have the former LF manager in my signature is because I copied it from a site.  I knew everyone would know who he is but I didn't feel the need to change it.  Thanks for the advice though.  And to answer the other post, I am a Cubs fan, so Cardinal, I'm sorry to say this but we own you this year, even though the Cards are in first place....

Its called a field goal Peewee.  :D

But really, why IS American Football called "Football"? ???

American football started as a variation to football that was similar to Rugby in that you could use your hands, only in America they didn't change the name, and the game just kept on evolving further away from football and rugby with the biggest change being the addition of the forward pass in the early 20th century, which was done because there were too many deaths in games.  I would much rather people call the sport American football than Gridiron, which is closer in meaning to the word "pitch" as in Washington and Dallas have had several shots at each  other through the media, but they will settle the dispute on the Gridiron this Sunday.  I played American football in high school, and the sport is my first love, although lately I can't get enough of Liverpool and enjoy very much reading up on the history, players, strategy, and watching matches, and can't effing wait for the prem season to start, but was just wondering if anyone here follows the NFL, either casually or as a "die-hard"  :pirate supporter

I actually hate the raiders, and put the wrong smily in  there, it was supposed to be a laugh at the word "die-hard" for which some members have taken the p.iss out me on this message board for using in my first post which I  intended as a joke.  I am actually a true die-hard Redskin fan since birth, being born in the district and my whole family being redskins fan.

Peewee, i felt the same about football my whole life, that it wasn;t a man's sport compared to american football, and had no idea what the hell offsides was, and it looked like utter chaos with the ball going up  and down the field in a near constant state of transition, until my friend, who is an arsenal supportor made me watch the champions league final and described a lot of what was going on, and then cried his eyes out when they lost.  I realized I was missing out on a great game and decided to study up and understand it as quickly as possible, something that I think is happening more and more in  America, and why pre-season American tours will become a staple of top european clubs training, because there is just sooo much money to be made in gaining fans across the globe.
American football is a great game, but at the top level is waaay to comercialized and designed for Televison veiwing, which is great for the instant replays of ever play, but you get a commercial break after every change of possesion.  Its also very expensive, requiring lots of equipment, and lots of players, so it is very hard to just start american football in a place where it isnt very popular, where as you could just drop a football into  a third world country and let the kids dribble the around playing keep away in tight spaces for a couple of years and you got the next Henry.  Thats why football has become and will remain the World's Sport, while American football, will continue to stay mainly in America.

joe as an american are you not embarrassed by the desire to call sporting events 'world series' when its obviously not the world taking part, only american teams, and when someone wins the world series do they really think they are world champions?

this is not a dig at you mate, just a question

I never knew the Redskins had a rivalry with the Raiders.

Then again, who doesnt hate the Raiders? :D

Its great that you see the size and magnitude of football. And how deep and impact it can make anywhere for that matter.

It is the one and only thing that brings people together.

Anyways, I find it admirable that you took time to learn about the club. Liverpool is without doubt, the most SUCCESSFUL club in England, despite what others may say. Statistics and sliverware will prove it.

Though, seeing as your friend was an Arsenal fan.. why didnt you support Arsenal instead?

I presume that the game you were watching was last year's Champions League Final? ???

Well the Toronto blue Jays aren't american.  And when they started the series, I;m sure that MLB was the only baseball league in the world, the two divisions are the national league and the american league (weirder how toronto is in that) and when they played each other it was literally the two best teams in the World, by default, and it made the game sound bigger.  And when you think about it, although it is untested, anytime we claim a club is the best in the world, it is true, although the way USA basketball has performed at an international level, that would probably be the best shot for an international club to lay claim to the title of world champs, though I still highly doubt it because all the best international players, play in the NBA.

Although I do see your point and do have a problem calling the Steelers and Heat World Champs, I feel like its ok in baseball, simply becuase it has been called the World Series for a long time, but I think the Steelers should only be called super bowl champs, and the Miami heat the NBA champions.  Maybe the American media likes to call its champions World Champions becuase of the Queen song, "We are champions.... of the world"  I dont think americans pay much attention to  the fact that there isnt any international competition for the title world champions, but I don't think that will stop until there is a legit international contender for  the title which is a LONG ways away. Although Liverpool won the European champions league in 2005, I am sure that also had to mean that they were the  champions of the world, I wonder if it will ever become an universal champions league 15, 20, 30 years down the road.

we dont claim to be world champions, the eufa champions league is just for the european federation, i think every federation has a champions league. i live in asia now and they also have a champions league for teams who play in countries in the asian federation.

they do have a world club champions game every year, its the winners of the eufa champions league and the winners of the south american version. we played in it last year and unfortunatley lost, in fact we have never been able to win it so really cant be classed as world champions.

joe just a question, have you ever travelled outside of america, i ask because watching the open recently the commentator mentioned that 95% of americans dont have a passport which i find amazing

I never actually said that liverpudlians would have claimed the title world champions.  Thanks for in info on the game between the south american and euro champion, I was wondering about that and wasn;t sure if it existed or not, I;m glad it does.  But two champions of two different tournaments playing a game doesnt have  the same feel as winning one big tournament, but I guess the traveling arrangements would be too crazy to have to fly a bunch of euro teams all over the globe and vice versa, as well as the away fans traveling complications.

No I have never left the states, in fact, i have only left the eastern time zone  once on a vacation (holiday) to las vegas but it wasnt any fun because I was in High school at teh time and went  with my parents, and vegas really isnt the family place that its trying to advertise itself as.  However, I am still young, turning 20 on the 17th of the month, and I do hope to spenda winter or summer term studying in England.  Its much more difficult to travel as  an american compared to europeans who can just hop on a train and be in another country in a few hours.  Lots of americans only go to the resort type areas of Mexico or the carribean islands for spring break, just to get wasted off of cheap boos and score with as many birds as humanly possible. no real reason to go to canada unless ur near the border, and for some reason a lot of americans don't like canada.  Its viewed as very unsafe to just go traveling around anywhere souh of texas pretty much, and europe is far and expensive as hell.  The pound and euro are both kicking our butt right now.  I know I don;t have a passport as of now, but 95% seems  off, I bet it is still a number that brits and europeans would find appaling though.   It is becomming more and more popular for college kids to spend a spring or fall in Europe in which they refuse to speak any language other than english, adn try to  get :censored: drunk in every counry and end up with a story that ends and begins with and "somehow I woke  up in Amsterdam"
