Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Definitely agreeing with Ace Ventura and woof here - sorry AB.

We've already had 3 games giving the youth boys and unwanted fringe players a game (which obviously I can see the sense in), but that's enough.  Today we should have allowed our new signings a chance to gel with the first teamers and I didn't agree with what Benitez did today.  The result itself didn't bother me today and it's obviously no reason to panic, but starting from our next game I want to see a stronger team fielded and a win.  Pointless games or not, winning breeds confidence - you heard Bellamy himself recently saying there is no such thing as a friendly and footballers want to win every game they play in.

Its basically a training session..the result means nothing...its all about preperation for the new season..and for what reason do you care so much what other fans think of our friendly games?

Well said as last season I thought we had an excellent pre-season and we didn't win the league.

So if this season means a poor pre-season but we win the league or get 1 step closer then im happy

Bad Bob wrote:I agree in principle Ace and Woof but haven't our World Cup lads just returned to training last week?  If that's the case, I would expect Rafa to ease them into the friendlies.  I expect Friday's line-up will be much more like the Liverpool team we recognize.  The lads will look to put down a marker in that one ahead of the CL qualifier and Community Shield.  If the big boys don't start in that one, then I'll question Rafa's thinking. :D

The players that took part in the World Cup haven't really played that much (that's the case with all other teams in the Premiership) and there is a reason for that. Benitez along with other managers has given those players an extra needed rest.

Players who didn't take part in the World Cup have played in pretty much all of the games, but players like Finnan for instance have given an extra rest as well because he's had a long season as well.

The reason I'm not worried about our team not gelling is because they play with one another every day in training. Pre-season friendlies are no different from training sessions.

On Friday, there will be more senior players (Gerrard,Alonso,Carra,etc..) than there will be of these reserve players.

i'm happy with the performance but not the result
i agree with woof that i have different eyes with rafa regarding the importance ofplaying traore, hoobs, and anderton

regardless the matter, the other players played at a better level of adaptation. paletta didn't desrve it, it was a mistake no doubt, but conceded one goal is opponent's fortune and seems too harsh.

i hope gonzales will sort out his problems quickly, cause we will be badly needing him at the real competition in the near future.

pennant rocks, bellamy not enough supplied, zenden fairly good, momo exclusively class, but need to be more gel with the other mids.

stevie made our team a half class higher, his arrival gave an instant impact to the team, and himself created some meaningfull threat with both his own shoot and assistance.

rafa cut off some "unnecessary" players being involved in this match, there's no more peltier, guthrie, etc. so, don't worry, next match i believe we won't see hobbs, etc. and gerrard, crouch, xabi to take their turns.

we'll win it next match, wanna bet?

On the subject of Hobbs, the only reason I can see why Rafa is playing him so much is that he intends to use him at some point, similar to Anderson. These two have clocked up a lot of pre-season minutes, especially Anderson. Jack Hobbs has the frame for a defender in the premiership but needs the experience.

Thgis said I tend to agree that fridays game against Mainz should be a senior team only

i was listening to Jan Molby on the radio this morning, and he reckons rafa is one striker short of a championship challanging side. He went onto say, that rafa needs a 20+ goal a season striker, to complement bellamy, crouchy or robbie up front.

i wasnt to worried about last nights result. the real stuff starts soon enough

Tbh mate i dont think it does mean they will get much playing time, in the previous pre-season under Rafa he played Raven and Potter and a few others but they never got near the first team (other than league cup matches), and our squad is far stronger now.
And after looking at the pair of them a little closer imo they are not ready. Anderson has a decent touch and looks like a clever player, but pysically doesnt look ready.
Hobbs played better yesterday but still doesnt look comfortable enough in posession and seems to panic and hoof it long without looking...sort of like Traore often does. With Agger and Palletta backing up Carragher and Hyypia i dont see Hobbs featuring at all in the league.

To be honest if we can't win the Championship with the squad we've got, we have serious problems!

Definatly need a striker in my opinion, saying that though Bellamy hasnt even had a crack at it yet, you never know maybe he will be that 20+ striker ???

I think that it's time to get back to business and give all the first team players some playing time before our match agains Macabi Haifa.

It's only a freindly!

a bit of trial and error, defeats, low tempo, all par for the course, the players only give 60-75% of effort, adn thats why I don't normally put in the effort to buy a ticket for such games!

I think 2 seasons ago, we got beat at home in the Qualifiers by AK Gratz 0-1?

Then look what happened.
