thanks Lando, I knew we'd get a sensible eventually, although I wouldn't expect anything less from this place :D

I like the look of the Navman, might give that one a go.

LeeJ... Enjoy whichever system you end up going for while you can... Sat Nav's are currently the most nicked item in the country so it'll soon be on a street corner somewhere in the hands of a hoodie wearing intellectual who'll no doubt sell it for 10 quid so he can buy ultra strength cider from Netto's (or worse)......!!!

I've got a TomTom go500 and apart from a problem with the mechanism that sticks it to the window it has been brilliant up to now.  I've had it for about a year and already there have been several upgrades so you would think that it is better now.  I know that the newer versions have door to door maps of GB and western europe though check when you buy (I need to buy a different SD card with Maps of Western Europe).

I do probably 50k miles a year driving and the TomTom has been f.uckin ace especially around our s.hithole of a capital where it can navigate to avoid the congestion zone.  I use Points of Interest (POI's) a lot to navigate to and I've found a couple of websites that you can get POI's as free downloads... not just for work but also for stuff like castles, national heritage sites, KFC's you name it.  With the TTG 500 the POI's are easy to install - I've also downloaded a POI editor so that I can add a phone number or other information to them.  Just make sure you back the thing up to your pc before you start installing other things on it.

To tell you the truth I spent years using road maps and A to Z's which is fine but the satnav takes a lot of stress out of driving (which is a huge part of my job) - so less stress makes Phil a happy bunny.

Sometimes there's a problem with downloading the phonebook contacts from your phone to the satnav it depends on what mobile phone you've got I've got a Nokia 6230i and have not had a problem with it but my Samsung d500 didn't want to know.  Also a Sony Ericson transfered contacts with a problem.

Using it as a handsfree has been good and poor... when I'm driving my car its generally good but when I'm in the white van then its poor because the satnav virtually sits above the engine and picks up all the noise.  Having said that I've never actually tried moving the satnav to the top of the windscreen (near the mirror) to see if this solves the problem.  By the way its the people on the other end of the line who can hear the engine noise... I can hear them fine.

And I paid about £430 for it last year but you can get it for about £200 cheaper this year so looks like a few good deals out there.

I also downloaded GB speedcameras for free, installed them and they work f.uckin ace - any new speed cameras you can add to the satnav yourself - its easy.. couple of Point of Interest sites that I've found if anyone is interested

points of interest

cameras and other poi's

I'm not sure about the TomTom's their suppose to be mint but they are soooooo expensive, regards cheaper SatNav's I'd say Garmin and Navman are good to go for, the good thing about the Garmin is it's so slim that it can fit in your pocket so if you want to take it to New Youk, Amsterdam, Barcelona, etc you can as it's very portable :)

Well done good deal... any problems with installing POI's or anything else give us a shout either in this topic or pm me and I'll see if I can help. I don't come on here everyday but I'll keep a look out for any queries you may have... just remember to back up the original SD card first mate :)
