He was the person who occupied the Swan hatch before the Losties came. He was pressing the button all along under the impression that something catastrophic will happen if its not done. He ran off after the brief engagement with the Losties. If I recall correctly, this all happened during the very beginning of Season 2.

Also, he does also have links with Jack Shepherd, where he can be seen in one of Jack's flashbacks.
