Should we - Rest our key players now?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby 7_Kewell » Fri Apr 28, 2006 6:26 pm

For me, 2nd place is out of reach and i think we should rest our key men for the final.  Personally, i would like to see some of our young players get a match, and give them a taste of the Premiership.  I'd also use the two last games to play Fowler for 90 mins and see if he can do it.

Any one else agree?

Not exactly, mate...

First of all, let's see how the Mancs fair tomorrow shall we?  If they lose to Chelski we're only 3 points back with 2 to play...noy exactly a lost cause.

Second, we've got Villa tomorrow, then a week off until Portsmouth next Sunday and then almost a full week until the trip to Cardiff.  I know we've played a lot of games this season but this is a well-spaced run in with ample time to rest.  If we start resting the likes of Stevie and Xabi now, we run the risk of them being rusty for the final.  Play them until the points are secure, I say, and then consider subbing.

As for Fowler, he'll play the full 90 without trouble if Rafa lets him.  Usually Rafa likes to bring fresh legs on up front every game, though, so I doubt we'll see it.

Gotta agree with not restin the players. Two games to maybe hijack 2nd spot....gotta take the chance I think. 2nd will give them more rest for next season with auto qualification for CL, so lets try for it. Anyway, be a little harsh to rest players and maybe affect the relegation battle with Pompey last game. I dont see the Scum takin the points tomoro, tho after las weeks tirade I almost wish they cud pinch the league jus to shut maureen up.
Stu Averill, a wannabe Scouse/Scot. I remember the good times & have faith in them comin back

Beside the Hillsborough Flame, I heard a Koppite mournin, "Why so many taken on that day?" Justice has never been done. But their memory we'll carry on. There'll be Glory Round The Fields Of Anfield Road

i agree. players obviously aren't capable of playing a game every seven days for the next two weeks.

infact stop them training aswell. that way they definitely won't get injured either.

NO.

You can't just give up.

What kind of an attitude is that? Not exactly a winning one is it?

If our players had your mentality in Istanbul, we would have just defended not to conceed more than 3 goals.

While theres a chance, you must always go for it lad.

Very silly question to pose.

I partly agree and I partly disgaree. I disagree that we should just throw the towel in and give up 2nd spot to the Mancs when they could lose against Chelsea and we could win against Villa, therefore closing the gap.

I agree that some players should be rested but instead of fielding eleven youngsters why not play a mixture of both? Play a different line up in both matches against Villa and Pompey. For example play a mixture of younger players with the likes of Agger, Carragher, Reina, Gerrard and Morientes and then the following game play a mixture of say Alonso, Sissoko, Dudek, Hyypia and Crouch with some reserves.

That way the reserves and youngsters get some experience whilst the senior members are rotated and rested but also keep match fit over the two week period.

Although I don't agree with taking our foot off the gas, maybe a few of the fringe or less used players could get a few minutes or even a start. Kromkamp, Agger, Hamann, Warnock and maybe even Anderson. I'm not talking about a B team, but a little shift to allow for a fresh XI in the FA cup and it would be nice to see Didi get some time on the grass (it could be his last  :( )

I think Rafa will keep the likes of Cisse, Kromkamp, Hamann and Warnock etc in the team because we should be beating Villa and Portsmouth with the side heavily rotated anyway. Some of the bigger guns should be on the bench incase things are going wrong against these two sides.

No.

Liverpool F.C. and Real Sociedad have agreed to play a friendly, and it's going to be this summer only if Liverpool avoid the first stages of the champions league. That means we need to be second, no matter what.

The game btw, would be not in San Sebastian, but in Tolosa, an small town of 20000 people near my town (same province) in which Xabi Alonso was born, to conmemorate the 750 aniversary of the town.

I know a friendly game is not important for you lot, but for me it's important to watch again Liverpool here, it's been too long since that afternoon in which Globelaar joked with the stand in a boring 0-0, or John Barnes nailed 2 goals in Anfield to my team to beat us 3-0.

Sorry I just didn't find important enough to make a new thread, but I had to say this news. We must be second, I don't want to wait to next year.

*sigh*

it would make sense if for example we had a few mid week games, but as St Mike said, we don't need to rest anyone. we have a nice break between our remaining games, so why should anyone be rested?
