Today's famous five - Friday posers

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby stmichael » Fri Mar 31, 2006 2:22 pm

Ok guys. Time for this friday's questions. Please try and answer as honestly as possible.

1. It turns out that we only have the money to buy either a top class striker or a top class right winger. Both positions need to be filled but you can only choose one. Your choice and why?

2. If you could overturn one decision made by a Liverpool manager in the last decade, what would it be and why?

3. A term which is bandied around on here frequently is "world class". How do you personally define that?

4. Which player has had the biggest impact on English football in your lifetime and why?

5. And a nice light hearted one to finish; when you were in school playing football, which Liverpool player did you pretend to be?

I'll nominate somebody for next week later :D

2.  Houlliers decision to make a comeback after his heart attack.  Think of the money we wouldn't have saved!

3.  Any player as good as Igor Biscan

4.  That Bosman dude.. and he didn't even play in England!

5.  Kevin Keegan
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

1. Would definitely go for a striker, with Zenden* coming back, Paul Anderson looking good in our reserves and Kromkamp able to play there we seem to have plenty of cover behind Gerrard, Garcia and the others that have a go on the right side.

2. That's a tough one as there a few i can think of, but without being unfair to Cisse, i would really have liked Benitez to have had the £14million to spend on his own choices.

3. Someone who's proven themselves in their league, plus at international or (high) european level.

4. As much as i hate to say it, Beckham does seem to have risen the profile of English players at overseas clubs. Gazza almost did this, but what with injuries and his drinking problem he slipped by the wayside. In the past apart from one or two english players, european teams seem to overlook English players. if you look at the current crop there are loads of our players both italian and Spanish teams would love to have in their squads. if it wasn't for the Premiership being the best league in the World i think more would move abroad.

5. As a kid i always wanted to be Souness (apart from his hair cut) my Dad used to take me to watch Liverpool and the way he charged into tackles made Vinnie Jones look like a ballet dancer!

*And before you say it- i know he's a left sided player- but he would free other players up for the right side.

Right winger:-if the supply to the strikers is improved,we will get more goals.. plus Flo will return from loan

2. If you could overturn one decision made by a Liverpool manager in the last decade, what would it be and why?

Selling murpy.. should have disposed biscan instead

3. A term which is bandied around on here frequently is "world class". How do you personally define that?

A consistent performer who can step up his game and rises to the occation when the team needs him.. like gerrard and ronaldihno

4. Which player has had the biggest impact on English football in your lifetime and why?

Thierry Henry.. he's helped end the scum domination of the premiere league

5. And a nice light hearted one to finish; when you were in school playing football, which Liverpool player did you pretend to be?

okey dokey......

1. It would have to be a topclass striker. We have Garcia, Kromkamp, Stevie G who can play on the right. The stats show we put in a shed-load of crosses, more than anyone else in the league, but look at our shot conversion rate. ranked 17th in the league. Imagine what we'd do with clinical, leathal finisher.......

stats from SSN:

Team             LIVERPOOL      League Rank
Games                 31
Goals                  42                 6
Shots                 453                1
Conversion %       9%                17
Crosses               896                1
Cross %              31%                2

(sorry to get all technical but just backing up my decision)

2. Traore not being sold to Everton for £1.1m  :D

no. I dont like the fact that Cisse cost us £14Mil but i would never reverse that kind of buy because he did score some important goals for us and without him, we may not have got through some of the earlier rounds of the champions league last year. I would have to say Diouf. £10m of waste. Though I think letting Fowler go and letting Owen go were big mistakes too. (Though I dont know whatwas going on intheir heads, if you want to leave to try something different, then so be it)

3. I see world class as being able to fit into, and start for, any team in the world. For example: Ronaldinho, shevchenko, stevie G

4. Its gotta be Beckham

5. Ian Rush :)

my two cents for what it's worth:

1. A top class striker must take priority. We can get buy with what we've got on the right side of midfield (Garcia, Cisse, FSP and maybe even Kewell or Zenden who've both played on the right in the past - in fact. Upfront we need someone who is prolific and will guarantee 20 goals every season. At the moment we don't have that.

2. The decision to let Zidane buy a house in Southport without signing for us.  :D

Seriously though, the decision not to buy Duff is the obvious one that springs to mind - though I also think Evans maybe could have pushed the boat out a couple of times (Desailly and a couple of others I seem to recall being missed).

3. When a player looks like nobody else could match him - that's World Class.

4. After Ronnie Rosenthal - it has to be either Denis Bergkamp or 'franco Zola.  I think they just changed the face of English football.

5. John Barnes

I dont believe a striker is a priority at the moment because i think our strikers will perform if supplied well... and they shown this in the last few games.
Look at chelsea, there strikers have the same average of goals as our strikers but its the goals from there wingers that is the difference between us and them-and if gerrard was played consistently in the middle i know he can get as many goals as lampard.

Sorry stmichael but you cannot bring a case to court, try it and then judge it yourself.. lets give that(judging) to someone else like JBG(?)

1. It would have to be a top class striker, I say this because if we had a 30 goal a season striker we would defo still be in the title race.

2. Houlier buying Diouf

3. A world class player in my eyes is someone who could fit into and play for any national team in the world.

4. I grew up watchin football in the early-mid ninties (b4 that i was too interested in lighting fires and playin knock door run) The one player who stood out above everyone else was Eric Cantona the guy truly made an impact whether it be for the right reasons or not!!     Physco French fly kicking B4574rd!!!

5. Ian Rush, Fowler and Collymore were my faves.

2. If you could overturn one decision made by a Liverpool manager in the last decade, what would it be and why?

I'll nominate somebody for next week later :D

1. A forward. Goals win matches.

2. Gerrard Houllier deciding to go for Diouff or Graeme Souness not making a serious effort to buy Roy Keane.

3. For me "world class" means you are in the top 24 players or so in the world (there being on average two world class players for each position).

4. Eric Cantona. There have been better players, but Contona was the guy who opened the door for all the big name foreigners that followed, like Bergkamp, Zola and Henry.

5. Steve Nicol.
