Australia has been condemned by the UN for the way in which it treats it's refugees (or those awaiting refugee status). Entire families are locked up for many years (5-7 years) in one of Australia's 7 mainland and 4 offshore detention centres. This has lead to horrific psychological and emothional trauma to people who, in many cases, are fleeing war torn countries, so they can make a better life for their families. These people know only one type of lifestyle. That which is familiar to them. In such high stress situations as 'mandatory detention', wouldn't you wish to revert to what is familiar and safe??
It's all very well to say if they don't integrate into Australian society then they should go back to where they came from. In many cases this accusation is being levelled at people who are born in Australia but who look Arab, Asian, etc.
What we need is TOLERANCE. I have a Sudanese family living next to me and they are just delightful. Quiet, peaceful, softly spoken, polite, willing to out of their way to help you. Across the road there is an Australian family of absolute knob heads!!! If I go out, I lock up tight because I feel under threat from these Aussies. Which do I want to leave?? It's not the Sudanese family.
Conform to the Australian way of life?? Now there is one hell of a debate. What is a typical Australian??
Shane Warne: Cricket hero, blonde haired sporting guru. Slayer of Pommie batsman?? Or maybe a womanising, cheating 'man whore' who can't keep his todger in his pants, which has now destroyed his beautiful wife & family. Great cricketer, moronic man!!
Wayne Carey: Aussie Rules (footballing) dynamo, Captain Marvel, family man. OR maybe, the bloke who rooted his best mates wife.
So what is the typical Aussie way of life??
No people, it should be about 'Live and Let Live'. We don't need to kick people out of this country simply because they don't get pi$$ed every Saturday night, smack the Missus about a bit, eat meat pies by the truck load and drive Holden cars. If that was the way we were supposed to be then we would never have such delights as a Kebab, curry, fried rice, souvlaki or a pizza...and what a boring place that would be.
I love the fact that Australia is diverse & I would love nothing better than celebrating that diversity. I want to share this great country with all the people who want to come here and try to make a go of it. But we all need to respect each other's difference...I might not understand why Habib requires his wife to cover her face but that's not any of my business and as long as he isn't breaking any human rights laws (not local laws thanks as too many have discriminatory undertones!!!), then I can accept that. Let's all work together to make this nation even greater.
It's about respect and tolerance.
