Got to think about it - The right way ?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JohnBull » Thu Mar 09, 2006 11:36 pm

I know I flipped after the Japan fixture but it was important. We had a settled side producing the best football I'd seen from LFC for a long time. We were even getting team punch-ups on the pitch if anyone came close to "One Of Us". So what happened ? We changed the team for NO reason and within a few games we went soft and made FOUR unessessary changes to the team at Bolton, 2-2  when should have walked it.
Last night's starting line-up was a disgrace and the Dutch bugger must have been over the moon.
There is NO gel between the forwards and Raffa has got to work out a paireing that works. Morro has had his chance and there should be NO more, Kewell pulls out of every dodgey tackle because he's more worried over the World Cup than anything LFC have to offer for his future. Crouch is doing exactly what we bought him for but who is picking up the knock downs ? Fowler is not the man he was but he's got more brains and committment than anyone else so why didn't he start ?

As Bob Paisley said "I never replace a player unless I've a better one and then only one at a time"

By The Way - That stupid game in Japan WAS important.

Paisley's day is gone Bull.

Its a whole different game now, and has been for 10-12 years, even more so in the past 3 years.

In Paisley's day we might have lost our best player but we could go out and smash the British record fee and buy an even better one.

At the moment we'd struggle to break our own record fee, which is almost £20million less than the British record.

You cannot spit the dummey out every time we lose and hark on about Paisley's or Shankley's day: they're long in the past and gone forever.

Like him or loathe him Rafa is the future.

For Jesus sake - Don't fall for the Rodney Marsh/Jim Beglin,/Whoever you want  :censored: . The game's the same - stick with a winning team -if you haven't got the bottle to say "you're dropped" or the player will sulk too much if he's dropped then say "squad rotation" but it's the same :censored:.
JBG  - Paisley would clean up today and Jose wouldn't know where to go !

I'm not disputin Paisley's greatness Bull, not disputin that at all.

What I'm saying is that when Keegan left for Hamburg, the club could shatter the British record fee to bring in the best in the business, Kenny Daglish.

When Owen left what happened?

Times have changed Bull, even greats like Shanks or Paisley would find it hard going managing Liverpool today. There are no Keegans at Scunthorpe or Hansens in Patrick Thistkle for a Paisley or Shankly to unearth.

The difference is that today everyone is looking for millions of pounds spent on players. We sold Keegan for 500K and got Dalgliesh for 460K - That's the difference (unless, of course you think that SRP was worth 26 million)

It was all about HONEST players doing their best , Keegan was never the best but was always 110% which is a bleading sight better than most.

Honest players are sadly few and far between these days, Bull, but its a fact of life.

Keegan was also a two time European player of the year.It takes a bit more than "honesty" to do that.Kenny Dalglish was his obvious replacement and we had the cash to go out and get him.The fact is,we wouldnt be in the market for a Dalglish now.Chelsea or Man U would snap him up first.

Mark Lawernson was one of the best prospects on the market in the early 1980s. We went out and paid big money for him.

Souness' fee was not small either when he came from Boro.

Ray Houghtan and John Barnes were signed for today's equivalent of £10m, and turned out to be bargains.

We could still afford to splash £1.9m for Beardsley and £2.8m to bring Rush back from Juventus.

Even as late as 95 we broke the transfer record to sign Collymore.

Paisley, Fagan and Daglish all had great success, but when it was needed and the time was right, they could go out and blow our rivals out of the water in the transfer market.

Rafa cannot do that.

They ARE out there We just need a little more biligual coaching staff who can see the potential, the football world does go beyond Espania.

Don't get me wrong, I still think that Raffa is the right man he just doesn't understand the British/English game. Neither does Jose and he'll find out. !

Come on off it Bull, Rafa has brought in English talent as well.

He has signed Carson, Hobbes, Anderson, took Crouch from Southampton and Zenden has played domestically for a while.

Rafa isn't perfect and he is still learning the British game, but he has made great strides at home. We aint 3rd place and in with a good shout for second for nothing.

If it wasn't for Abramovich's millions we'd be challenging for the Championship now (I know thats a stupid argument as Abramavich IS here, but it does show that Rafa has made progress).
