Maybe (unlike me) you don't agree with the tone or sentiment expressed in that article.

I agree with the sentiment that if a recently arrived minority conspire to subvert the peace and democracy of a sovreign nation they should certainly be prevented from doing so .

BTW. Niall you're quite right regarding the plight of Aboriginals and Native Americans .IMO They have every right to demand change ,recognition and restitution.

I can see Big Niall's point but I think that its not hugely relevant to the topic in question.

My girlfriend spent some time in Oz and my brother is currently working in Sidney. Both have said that they are taken aback by the undercurrent of racism and discrimination in Aussie society towards aboriginal people.

However, in so far as the argument that Europeans have robbed the natives of Oz, the USA and elsewhere of their ancestoral lands go, people have to accept that the horse has bolted. It has happened all over Europe. Northern Ireland is quite unmistakenably part of the island of Ireland and the majority of people in that province have been there "only" been there 350 years and "stole" it from the natives. However, they are there and have been there for a hell of a long time and won't budging and Irish Republicans have to accept this reality. The same goes for parts of Eastern Germany and Poland, most of the Balkans and most of European Russia. Australian natives should be respected and not mistreated but the argument that the majority of Oz' population are European outsiders is not valid: they're not European, they're modern Australians.

I don't condone racism but for me racism is where either its direct and explicit such as thugs using racist abuse or beating up people because of their race or indirect, where a person might be denied a job because of his or her skin colour.

However, I am of the view that when people emigrate to a new country they should respect the laws, values and culture of that country. I see no problem with Little Italys or Little Chinas being set up and I think it would be a crime if a country outlawed, say, the practice of Islamic worship within a Muslim's own home or in his place of worship. However, if that Muslim walks down the high street in a western country and is offended by women wearing short skirts or whatever, then thats his problem, and if he cannot tolerate it, he should go home.

The immigrant cannot have it both ways, he must compromise as well.

when i lived in egypt (whilst teaching), i respected the customs of the locals, their ideals and more importantly abided by the laws of their country.

i did not expect egypt to change laws to accomodate me, nor do i expect britain to change laws to accomodate others. each nation has its own values and laws, and if you go to live there, you have to abide by them.

thats it !! the old saying : ''when in rome...........................''

So , it looks as though we all applaud the Aussie stance and wish that British politicians showed the same forthright attitude when dealing with similar issues that threaten the welfare of our society ? .

When in Rome .................................. order a pizza .  :D

Just this week in England Irish people were thrown off their land just because they're Irish.

That and it wasn't their land, they were travellers who just decided to land there, made an absolute tip of the place, had no respect for the locals, ignored the law, and probably stole all around them.

But it was really racist :D

Good article Woof, and I think this is a srt of backlash to the extremistswe have seen on TV and the media in general.  We must remenber however that they are extremists and a minority.

I would guess he said what the majority are thinking. Yes we like a multi racial society and it has greatly helped us over the centuries and not just lately BUT weve had enough of the extremists and if you dont like it then tara.

This is always dangerous as its close to te border of racism and certain political groups coud try and take advantage but its up to us to maintain the balance between acceptance, tolerance and ignorance on all sides of the debate.

I am proud to be British and Welsh and proud of our culture and achievements but at the same time trying to live in a progressive society

Nobody's denying that most "british" things have foreign elements e.g. tea, Sterling, Royal family etc but that is totally different to rejecting GB law.

If you don't like it - get out.
