Liverpool are rivalling Rangers for the services of Sheffield United midfielder Michael Brown.
The former Manchester City man is out of contract in the summer and Blades boss Neil Warnock would prefer to cash in on the player's talents during January's transfer window.
Warnock has confirmed Liverpool are very much involved in the hunt for Brown's signature, although Scottish reports indicate that Rangers remain favourites to land their man in the summer.
A pre-contract at Ibrox could be signed by the 26-year-old, as the Glasgow club look to follow up their eye-catching 2004 swoop for Jean-Alain Boumsong.
"I have spoken to Gerard Houllier on a number of occasions about Michael Brown, including a conversation only this week," Warnock told The Yorkshire Post.
"They are talking about signing him in the transfer window but it will depend on whether Michael wants to go.
