World Cup spot - a right for Uruguay

Uruguay has a divine right to play in the World Cup finals, according to star striker Alvaro Recoba, the architect of the goal that defeated Australia in their first qualifying match.

Recoba said it was only natural for countries like Australia to try to reach next year's finals in Germany.

"But we're a big country with a big past and we've got a right to play," he told reporters after his team's first training session on Australian soil ahead of Wednesday night's return match in Sydney.

"Uruguay has a divine right to play."

i don think anyone will miss uruguay if they failed to qualify for world cup...
world cup will be a different tournament if power house like Brazil, France, England, Holland, Italy, Spain, Argentine not compete....
Uruguay only has a divine right to play in qualifying round......

I am suprised this is news to you Lionheart.

I have always known they believe they should have automatic qualification. But it is a little suprising they are so vocal about it.

to be fair, South America should have another 1/2 spot at least. Why on Earth does Concacaf get 3 and a half ffs! It has two good teams in the US and Mexico, and an average side in Costa Rica, yet it gets 3 and a half spots, 3 would be ample. South America should have got that extra half spot, so Uruguay woudl qualify automatically and Australia should have played Bahrain.

Seeing as the USA (average team at best) and Mexico (perrenial under achievers) earn a direct route, you would think one direct entry entry from Oceania would not be too much to ask. That way, Uruguay would have to play off against a CONCACAF not oceania. Each zone should have a minimum of of 1 place...otherwise it's a case of discrimination based of geography.

On the other hand a qualification through Asia (as we will have to do for next world cup tournament) will give us consistently top quality opposition over a sustained period which will assist in the success of future Australian teams.

There are arguements both ways and regardless of what happens, someone, somewhere is going to be a bit p**** off.
