The longest unbeaten START to a season is 29 games shared by leeds in 73/74   and liverpool 87/88

Yes. Its 29 league games. Liverpool lost to Everton in the autumn of 1987 in the league cup but they and Leeds hold the record of League matches.

Arsenal look like they are closing in on it soon and I think they will beat it.

Maybe it won't be such a significant record given the state of the Premiership below the bottom three.

Not such a fair statement. Most Premiership clubs, on their good day, can certainly produce an upset against the top 3. Charlton, Fulham, Bolton, and some more. Man U and Chelsea can testify to that. Arsenal's feat so far is quite amazing, i must admit. But there's still a good number of games left to play, so got to wait and see.

It was Wayne Clark (tell me if i'm wrong) who scored the goal against us that lost us the record outright.  It was in the league though.

Everton had beaten us in the league cup (littlewoods then?) a few weeks earlier as well.  The record is purely for league games.
