I like the guy.  I think he has given his best shot at trying to make the club great again.  The team he inherited was awful.  I was at Roy Evans' last game in charge against Tottenham in the Worthington Cup.

The team that night? November 10 1998.

Friedel
McAteer
Staunton
Leonhardsen (Riedle 45 )
Fowler
Owen (Murphy 82 )
Heggem
Ince
Bjornebye
Carragher
Thompson

Subs not used: James, Kvarme, Harkness,

I know this seems like a different lifetime ago now but he took over alone immediately after that game and for a time undeniably made us great again and one of the most feared teams in Europe.  He was one of the most celebrated managers in Europe at the time.

Over the last two years though, the team has neither moved forward or evolved into the complete team, which we undoubtedly had the potential to do.  A combination of bad signings (the Senegalese players, Biscan, Ziege etc....) and letting other players go who were not replaced (McAllister, Litmanen....) has taken its toll on the team.

Unfortunately, he is being baited by the media, he's being portrayed as a bumbling fool and he is mocked all of the time.  I do think it's wrong, but he is the manager of Liverpool Football Club and we as fans demand greatness.  Houllier has given us lots of memories and I thank him for that, I will support him while he is manager, but it doesn't mean I like the direction the team is going in.  He is too loyal to some players (Biscan, Murphy, Heskey) where once he just kicked them out of the club at the merest sign of weakness as a player (McAteer, Westerveld, Fowler...).

Will the Gerard Houllier who turned the club around in such a short space of time please stand up?

Should he leave the club soon, and it wont be before the season ends, if at all, I think it is only going to get worse.  Let's see what the close season brings.

No. Nothing good to say about him. He is an egotistical pr**k who professes to love the club. But if he had that much affection he should have resigned by now. He was meant to build a side which is capable for competing to win the title. He has spent over £120m. We are nowhere close.

The measure of success is the championship and a run in Europe. Not some poxy second rate cups which we won with a massive amount of good luck.

The only positive thing that Liverpool had when Houllier took sole charge, was a young and vibrant Micheal Owen, so it is unfair to say he has achieved nothing and that we have gone backwards.

We are no closer now to winning the title than Evans was. Evans managed 3rd twice and 4th twice (1996/7 level on points with 2nd) Houllier has had one of everything, but cups aside has not really done much in the league. Where are we now? Currently losing one third of our league games is not good enough and we all know the team can do better as it has shown in the past. Either Houllier has lost it or the team is past it.......

I thought second with a points total that would have won us the league on many other occasions is something, but maybe it's just me.

But it wasn't enough to win the title and therefore speculating that any other season it might have got us the league is pointless.

I still thought that was a successful season, admitily things have declined seriously over the last two years, but do not ignore what Houllier has achieved.

I don't, I just keep it in perspective. One swallow doesn't make a summer (or a hooker)

That's true Owzat. But three years of progression was impressive.

I think you may be getting me wrong, in terms of my views on Houllier.

I still think that even if he gets 4th spot the question of whether he should continue as manger is still there, and I have been hugely disapointed with some of his decsions and excuses.

But when people start calling him a French clown how dosen't care about Liverpool and has acheived nothing, I think that's out of order.

Exactly, I don't see why people get personal about him.

That article is so pathetic I wouldnt be surprised if GH wrote it himself.Maybe Im reading the wrong newspapers but I find journalists are far too soft and gentle with Houllier.Ive seen very little abuse.

It's St Patrick's day not 1 April.

Why didn't the article mention the little fact that he has spent £120m and his team is currently closer in points terms to relegation than they are to Arsenal.

Or the fact that he has built one of the worst Liverpool teams in living memory.
