The legend thing is rubbish, I mean Beckham will be a legend but he is not very good. Fame does not equal ability.
the heavyweights will always be the glamour division and ali was probably the best of all time. there`s been other great champs but what defines ali`s reign is the competition he faced and his against the odds wins over liston and foreman. the likes of liston, patterson, bonevena, quarry, frazier, foreman, norton, shavers ect were all excellent fighters and even the likes of ron lyle would spark out the heavyweights these days. george foreman proved himself very competitive at the age of 49 a few years ago against the likes of moorer and holyfield, imagine the foreman who ali beat.
robinson is an all time great but the lower divisions are full of deserving champions like henry armstrong, micky walker and harry greb. its a sad fact that the lower weights just dont fire the imagination of the general public (not fight fans) like the heavys do. ali in his prime was the most recognisable face on the planet even more so than richard nixon. he took not only boxing but sport in general to a new level in the public psyche.
