diego shuoldnt be there for same reason as best. the iconic footballer has to be iconic off the pitch as well as on. no point respecting a player then finding out 75% of his body is filled with cocaine or some otehr drug.

have to be pele for me, no offence but the guy was immense... platini close second

Pele will win the football one, but the ultimate winner MUST be Ali. He set teh scene for super stardom amongst sports stars and is a true icon of sporting lagend.

If he does not win I am spewing it.

Ali as well, but we'll have to see. a load of numpties are bound to back paula radclife, coz she can run far... idiots most people.
ali had the charisma and charm for all.
was a bit gutted tyson didnt make top 10 in the boxing one. in his prime that man was a total animal, completely unbeatable

I'd be amazed if Ali doesnt win it.
Pele was a cert for the football and could be top three

If anyone from Britain had a chance for me it would be Redgrave for his medals, but Ali had it all.

Robinson was a better fighter and Ive never met any old boxers who argued with that but only one man ever called himself the greatest and he was right  :bowdown

Diego's off field behaviour is not acceptable.. yet his iconic reputation.. is purely down to his awesome skills and the mark that he left on "world" football.. the most complete and awesome footballing display by any individiual that I have had the privilege of seeing is his.. even his subtle touches, weighted passes, bread and butter stuff.. was beautiful..

.. bitterness .. well I say ppl need to get over.. it some will accuse Gerrad of diving for that penalty ... I say he did what he had to .. in the same way the Hand Ball goal was opportunist.. and he got away with it.. if the ref had seen it, he wud not have given it.. etc etc etc .. so lets applaud the talent and the impact of that talent..

Nice to see

I too absolutley worship Diego Armando Maradona.

Ok, he had his 'issues' off the field, but all people have problems, it was because he was such a superstar on the field that it was all magnified ten fold, just like Mr Tyson in boxing. Doesnt mean he wasnt as good as he was, it is impossible to dismiss his amazing ability no matter what he done.
Just my opinion of course, but no one was better and definetly not Pele, firstly he played in great teams with great players, whereas Diego didnt, he did it all by himself. Also pele has an amazing number of goals scord, but this was in the Brazilian and american (dont make me laugh!) leagues, he didnt do it in europe.....I always wonder why that was.

Diego also fior me. Pele was before my time, and he never plied his trade in tough European leagues.

Pele played in dazzling Brazilian teams (speaking of which, Garrincha should be in the above list) whereas Maradona played in an Argentine team that was plodding and workmanlike at best, yet singlehandedly won them the WC in 1986.

I remember watching 86 on the box, :censored: television reception and terrible matches totally illuminated by the greatest genius there ever was in football.

Sorry, should have qouted in previous post, but just thought of this - He also done the same at Napoli, the equivalent probably of Southampton or Portsmouth winning the league. Tremendous, that was there first and to this day LAST league title, he also won them the UEFA Cup too (if i am not mistaken!) again a feat never likely to be repeated by the team from Naples.

Also good to see he was looking so slim when he was at the CL Final.

Napoli had Careca (a top class Brazilian striker), Alamao (a fantatsic, if aging, Brazilian winger), Maradona and 8 Italian bums (ok, one or two of them were internationals and weren't so bad). Naples is a crazy city but as Liverpoolanytime says, their football team were about the equivalent to Southampton in England.

They spent an absolute fortune bringing Maradona there........it would be like Portsmouth paying £70million for Ronaldinho, and while he achieved extraordinary success there, it soon went pear shaped and Napoli went bankrupt.

Yea loved Careca (what a name too!!! Careca), but the above qoute is probably why everything went 'pear shaped' too much Mafia influence on the club and players (esp. Diego!).

What i meant to say was 'too much ALLEGDED Mafia influence' just in case they happen to reading  :idea .
I'd rather know of 'La Cosa Nostra' as opposed to being approached by them, and having to
'Sleep with the Fishes'  :shifty

.. Neapolitians.. not only worshipped the legend .. but declared a 'Maradona day..' a sort of Bank holiday.. :D

Napoli not only went bankrupt but now languish somewhere in the 3rd division of the Italian league.. :(

Yeah, its sad.

I think they got re-promoted to Seria A two or three years ago but were relegated again and are falling back down the divisions.

Naples is a big city, a melting pot really, and truthfully, Napoli should be oe of the giants of the European game.

A classic case of utter and complete mismanagement of a club.

Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest boxer ever. Don't know why everybody now loves Ali - must be his disease. He was exceptional but not the greatest.

Most footballers cheat and it is stupid to single Maradonna out for his hand ball. Is Henchoz a cheat for all his hand balls?

The legend thing is rubbish, I mean Beckham will be a legend but he is not very good. Fame does not equal ability.
