Sporting legends - Which one

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

Postby taff » Tue Jun 07, 2005 3:16 pm

Did anyone see the sporting legends programme on Sky on Sunday night.  They had the top ten footballers of all time.

I cant remember but I think it was

Maradonna
Pele
Moore
Beckenbauer
Charles
Cruyff
Puskas
Platini
Bobby Charlton
Zidane

Who would you vote for

fair assumption I think.

Of players of the last decade or so I think Zidane, Maldini and perhaps Ronaldo are absolute legends of the game.

King Kenny should be in there though :D

.. with all respect Scott... Ronaldo.. is not even within a whisker of that team.. a load of hype and unfullfilled mostly, in his case..

.. for me Ronaldhionio will be a more complete player.. if he can make it....

The test for the legends team was there influemce and skill.. no-one can argue with the selection really :) they were the best..

I said maybe Ronaldo, and yes he is within a whisker of that team, not in it, but worth mentioning.

Load of hype and unfulfilled? ???? ???

Rubbish!

93-94 Cruzeiro 12 Goals, 14 Games
94-95 PSV Eindhoven  30 Goals, 32 Games
95-96 PSV Eindhoven  12 Goals, 13 Games
96-97 FC Barcelone  34 Goals, 37 Games
97-98 Inter Milan  25 Goals, 32 Games
98-99 Inter Milan  14 Goals, 19 Games
99-00 Inter Milan  3 Goals, 7 Games
00-01 Inter Milan   (-)
01-02 Inter Milan  7 Goals, 10 Games
02-03 Real Madrid  23 Goals, 31 Games
03-04 Real Madrid  24 Goals, 32 Games
04-05 Real Madrid  21 Goals, 34 Games

thats 205 goals in 261 league games, absolutley incredible record, up there with the best.

Also he has scored 50 goals for Brazil in 81 appearences.

1 x Dutch Cup 1995-1996
1 x Spanish League 2002-2003
1 x Spanish Cup 1996-1997
1 x Cup Winners Cup 1996-1997
1 x UEFA Cup 1997-1998
2 x Copa America 1997, 1999
1 x World Cup 2002
1 x Dutch League Top Scorer 1994-1995
2 x Spanish League Top Scorer 1996-1997, 2003-2004
1 x Copa America Top Scorer 1999
1 x World Cup Top Scorer 2002
3 x FIFA World Player of the Year 1996, 1997, 2002
2 x European Footballer of the Year 1997, 2002
3 x World Soccer Player of the Year 1996, 1997, 2002

Of course he was also the golden boot winner in the World Cup which Brazil won in 2002.

If the man hadn't had his horror run of injuries, Ronaldo could've possibly been the greatest player of all time.

Scott I tend to agree with Zara.Ronaldo has got an impressive C.V.What you havent mentioned, are the players that played along side him.Look at Phil Neals medal haul,Phil was never the best fullback I have seen yet I would be suprised if anyone in English football has as many medals. He won these medals playing in a great team.Ronaldo has played at the highest level in club and international football in great teams.Iam not trying to compare Phil Neal with Ronaldo, just trying to make the point that because you are succsessful in a great team, doesnt quaiify you for legend status.

fair call, but he was an instrumental part of those great teams.

plus his goal scoring record is comparable to the greats.

.. this is not about the great goal scorers with respect.. Ian Rush could come in to that category..

Legends who made a huge impacct .. whose skills were extraordinary and unrivalled.. Zedane quite rightly makes it beacause in the modern era.. post Platini .. he has been the best all round..

Off topic, but for your information, Ryan Giggs would have equalled Phil Neal in some kind of domestic medal haul had Manchester Urinal beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final last month.

Of course, Neal won four European Cups to Giggs flukey one.  :buttrock

What about no George Best.

Pele will probably win it, with Maradonna a close second although Diego did get criticised for his off field antics, although I see that as part of his legend IMO.

All these players had a huge impact, is there anybody else that could be considered/taken away from the list

.. Diego's off field behaviour is not acceptable.. yet his iconic reputation.. is purely down to his awesome skills and the mark that he left on "world" football.. the most complete and awesome footballing display by any individiual that I have had the privilege of seeing is his.. even his subtle touches, weighted passes, bread and butter stuff.. was beautiful..

.. bitterness .. well I say ppl need to get over.. it some will accuse Gerrad of diving for that penalty ... I say he did what he had to .. in the same way the Hand Ball goal was opportunist.. and he got away with it.. if the ref had seen it, he wud not have given it.. etc etc etc .. so lets applaud the talent and the impact of that talent..

So cheating by deliberate handball is just opportunist magic now is it as long as ref doesnt see it. LOL
So if Stam had kinghit Gerald behind play and put him out of the game and it didnt seen  by ref and Milan had won the CL that would have been what.......an  opportunist tackle

. Umm what :D

.. I'm not gonna argue with u over what the refs see and what palyers do to win games.. Diego is not unique in that respect even the grt Linekar tried to score with his hand... was off celebrating (against the Dutch Euro 88) and was pulled bak for hand ball.. now if that had stood wud your still be bitter ??? I think not..

.. suffice to say that Diego had his fair share of opponents trying to kick him off the field... now that could also be construed as "cheating" ..  as I said before .. acknowledge the talent.. which you can not deny .. :p
