I like the 4-5-1 option. Works well as a contain and counter stategy against stronger sides and gives a platform to dominate lesser teams . My biggest problems with the 4-5-1 system is the temptation for some players to just lump the ball upfield for the lone striker to scrap for, and if a wide man does put in a decent cross will the attacking midfielders be brave and quick enough to get into the box to make use of it .

I guess you have to look at what players you have available before you decide upon a particular formation . Given the RIGHT players I think 4-5-1 is the way to go.

When Rafa first came over he said he would pick the system to suit the players and said that just because he played 451 at valencia didnt mean he would do the same at liverpool.  I don't think we would have played so many games this season with 1 up front if we had not had so many injured forwards.

I don't really have a preference between 451 and 442 and i think Rafa will continue to change it next season depending on the opposition and whether we are home or away.

Our close season buys will maybe give a clue as to what we are going to look like next season.  If we go for aimar for example, then we are probably gonna be 451 most of the time with aimar as the link player.  If this talk of Crouch is true (hope its not) then Rafa is probably gonna prefer 442

One thing is for sure, whichever system we use we need better wide players to make it work.  I actually quite rate zenden and I'd definitely take him on a free.  There was talk of us getting him years ago when he was at barca and i was gutted he went to chelsea.  He was in and out of the side at chelsea but has had a great 2 seasons for boro.

The biggest problem for rafa this summer i think is what to do with kewell, i honestly don't think rafa knows whether to keep him or punt him.  This could really influence who he decides to bring in

Agreed.

I remember saying to a mate, its not that he's better than what we have, he's probably not, but the fact is he's different and as good. On a free transfer why not?

I think if he does bring in Zenden, then he's looking at the big pitcure. A player who'd improve the squad and first 11 SLIGHTLY... and Joaquin in on the right. :D

No seriously, i believe the signing of Zenden indicates a big money signing. So watch this space.

Yeah thats the way i see it.

Except I have a feeling that the bulk of the funds will go on reina, a new striker and a new centre back.

Who do you reckon for the right?  I'd like SWP but can't see it.  Would have liked to see us go for pennant, if he sorts himself out he'd be a good winger for 2 million.  Can't think of anyone else in the prem who'd be a realistic target, so Rafa will probably look to la liga again

wonder what sort of price tag Joaquin would carry?

remember the England v Spain game last year when we got murdered by them (and Rooney lost it and had to be subbed before he started foaming at the mouth and biting people)?

If I remember rightly it was Joaquin playing down their right side and he was UNSTOPPABLE. Imagine him steaming down the wing for us and pinging in crosses for Moro to nod in all day long

I'm not sure of Zenden.

He is a talented player with good tactical awareness who can now play in a number of positions (and so is a potentially a very good squad player) but he strikes me as a big time Charlie and I'd have my doubts about his mentality.

However, after what happened this year I'm prepared to trust Rafa although I'm not exactly jumping with joy over the fact we're about to sign Zenden.

Benitez' preferred line up is 4-2-3-1, with a bank of three midfielders supporting the front man.

Glad to see some positive comments about Zenden. Haven't seen that much of him  not being a Boro' fan but when I have seen 'Boro he's the only one who has caught my eye. 50 plus caps for Holland and 'Boro's best player . You may not rate him as world class but on a free ? can play wide left (could be the nail in kewells coffin) or central midfield and if as someone pointed out it free's up funds for further transfers why not ? .  :)

at the end of the day, it's not just about improving the team but improving the squad. that is where we let ourselves down. our best eleven is a match for anyone in the premiership on our day but our major stumbling block is that the majority of "backup" players just aren't good enough.

zenden is not a wide left player, he's a central midfielder. he almost stumbled across his best position by default at boro due to the emergence of stewart downing. i think he'd add some good depth to the squad though and he's available for nowt so it's worth a gamble.

He's a left sided winger doing a job in central midfield. The lads a good player. Riise or Warnock at left back with Zenden on the left looks ALOT better to me than Traore and Riise.

If Rafa can get Traore and Biscan to improve then he can make Zenden even a better player and more a useful player, I'm not excited about being linked with Zenden however the other part of me is not worried as we're in the hands of Benitez the man who got us the CL in a span of 9 months in his first year.
