Spain - The new scotland?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby taff » Wed May 11, 2005 1:14 pm

Heres something that popped in my head the other day after reading some comment about "another spanish player".

Over the years weve had loads of Scottish players in the team althought not so much as of late.  Mainly because of Shanks I imagine and the amount of talent there was North of the border.

Europe is a more united place these days and football seems to have fully embraced the freedom of labour etc probably more than any other industry.  Spain is not that place we go to for a drunken laugh every July anymore and the boundaries are falling all the time.

So is Spain now our new Scotland

Will we see Alonso, Garcia and Morientes getting photographed together a la Hansen Sounness and Dalglish.

Wasn't LFC funded by a scot and in the initial years the majority of the team were scottish. Being a scot he was too tight to pay the rent at Goodison!!!!

Scotland has often gone into tournaments with decent teams and done terribly (like Spain), they are also probably the only teams to lose to England via penalties (ok, stretching mcAllister's 96 peno miss)

Both of them struggle to speak English :grinning:

Tis true, their nick name in the early years was "The Team of Mac's".

Early days Taff, our celtic connection wasn't built in one season. When Foolier was in charge we had an influx of "french" players ,they didn't exactly set the place on fire .
So far only Alonso and Garcia are proving their worth . Morientes has yet to live up to expectations and as for the rest ? Josemi ?, Pellagrino ? Nunez ? . Do you miss them ? .

Sorry mate ,Spain is definitely not the new scotland (so far   :D  )

Agreed about Morientes, I am hoping he does something a soon as the season starts or else I will start to worry.

Pellegrino is actually Argentinian, but is also cr@p.

I think that Nunez has proved himself to be a decent squad player, the type who can come on late in the game and run the flanks, he also gets stuck in and works hard, but he will never set the world alight.

Thanks for that Leon ,or can i just call you pedantic ? You know where i'm coming from when I included Pellagrino in the "spanish " list .
As for Nunez . a decent squad player you say ? whats your point ?
I'm sure we can find decent squad players in the uk ,even in Scotland (  :D  ) ,and I'm sure they'd have a bit more fire in their belly .

Steve Nicol never set the world on fire, but he was a decent solid squad player.

nicol was a great player, in fact one year i`m sure he won the football writers or players player award from fullback.
he even scored a hatrick away at newcastle once, he`s better than any fullback we`ve had since.......maybe rob jones at his best shades him (at his best i thought jones was outstanding and the only fullback giggs hated playing against when giggs was in his prime).

In my opinion, out of the Spanish lot, the only one who can improve is Morientes. His problem is that in all the years he played for Real Madrid, he was always a substitute. His best year was when he played for Monaco not long ago. I think next year he'll have a good season if he can play regularly. Alonso and García are performing more or less the same as in Spain. Regarding Josemi, Nuñez and Pellegrino, I must honestly say that I have never liked them. Nuñez never played in his team, and Pellegrino did not play either last year in Valencia. Barcelona had previously got rid of him, because people did not like the Argentinian. If we want to get good Spanish players I would suggest Torres, Luque, Joaquín, Xavi... but these are much more expensive than the last three we have talked about.

Rob Jones, your taking the p**s.  At his best he was a great defensive full back but IMO Nicol was far superior over several years both in defence and attack.
