The gooners game - In retrospect

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby dawson99 » Mon May 09, 2005 8:15 pm

hey all
not sure if this is here, but havent seen anything about the gooners game.
Forget cheatski, that arsenal side is the best in the premiership, barr none, and for 30 minutes in the first half they made us look appaling.

Hypia has done a fantastic job for us in the champs league but when hes up against pacey attackers he is really starting to show his age.

The second half of the match was far better but i have to say that players like fabregas are starting to look pretty damn scary and we need to sort something out before next season.

again sorry if this is already here somewhere, and i know we should all be looking to the CL final, but after this game on sunday im a little nervous about next season.

agree?

Absoloutely no way.

I thought it weird yesterday when I logged on that there was no Arsenal thead to be found.  It's like it never happened.

To be honest, I haven't seen the match as I visited London on Saturday and I listened to it on Five live on the drive back on Sunday until I was able to pick up 96.7 City FM and listen to Aldo.  I will watch it on my e-season ticket tomorrow.  I heard we were better in the second half but it sounds like we were awful in the first apart from the first ten minutes or so.

If you want to know why I was in London, I was tapping up a Chelsea forum.

:D :D :D

Anyway, as far as Arsenal discussion goes, I listened to the after match phone in with Aldo and nobody was ar$ed about Everton taking fourth, on the contrary, our fans were actually congratulating Everton.

We didn't lose that fourth place yesterday, we lost it at Southampton, Palace, and Boro etc.......

for 45 mins, they do played like the best team in the country. slick passes, quick movement, pace and an all round confidence in their game. Granted, our minds were not there and all our moves broke down in the centre circle.

Riise rescently admitted that he and his fellow team-mates have had a hard time concentrating ever since the first leg against Juventus, and I think that has costed the fourth place.

united kicked their :censored: at highbury, arsenal are very fragile - its all well and good starting well but we had them on the rack second half and if our strikers could shoot we would have won. their goals came from a slip by carragher and dudek getting nutmegged and a free kick where dudek looked glued to a post.

Arsenal were iresistable for 30 minutes in the first half yesterday. Fleetfooted, slick passing and carved us open a few times. Second half - We bossed it and caused them problems. I really fancied us to get a 2nd after Gerrards opener but some good goalkeeping from Lehman and some last ditch recoveries from Cole and Senderos meant it never happened.

Chelsea are a better team than Chelsea. Not as pretty but better. Arsenal look vulnerable when you take the game to them, especially without the threat of Henry on the break. They will struggle without Viera next season - I believe he will be playing at Madrid or Barca next season.

My observations from yesterdays game:

- Baros desperately needs a goal

- Gerrard had a pretty poor first-half then ran the game in the 2nd

- Cisse played very well - Was lively, had a good touch, showed awareness and good link up play - Give him 90 minutes against Villa please Rafa

- Dudek is still dodgy

- We are a much better team away when we are chasing a game. STOP PLAYING TO 'NOT LOSE' AND START PLAYING TO WIN WHEN WE ARE ON OUR TRAVELS.

The table dont lie does it? Arsenal have had a very inconsistant season and on their day can beat anyone as they showed against us. Wenger had them fired up to beat us as he defo has a grudge against Liverpool. We were still shocking in the first half and again i wonder how a team that looks world beaters in europe can look so poor in the premiership. They are probably a better passing and movement side than Chelsea but have been poor at the back this season. Thats where the difference has been between Arsenal and Chelsea.

there's so many factors relating to who is the best team. obviously, according to the table, chelsea are the best (i.e. most domestically successful or effective) team this season. but in terms of attacking football it has to be arsenal when they click. there have been several times this season when i've been watching them play juts staring in admiration. some of their passing and moving is so fast and accurate and imaginative its pure poetry in motion.

their problem is that they have no resilience. if a team goes at them they go in a big sulk at the sheer affront of it and start to look vulnerable. they also suffer to a degree from inconsistency - but nowhere near as badly as we do.

we showed in the secobd half of the game that we can play good enough football to gett the better of them though. i just wish we'd played like that a few other times in the season, but it proves we can go out and fight for a result if we need it. i'll be expecting the same approach in the CL final.

That's the best advice our lads should be learning. We should be always playing for a win, not just to scavenge 1 point.
I think that is Rafa's first thing to improve in our lads, give them more aggressivnes and mentality of a "must win".

Thats how I saw it .

I found myself thinking Rafa got this one wrong.Admittedly he changed things for the second half and we looked at least as good as them but by then it was a bit to late .
It was a game we had to win but we still only started with one up front . There's a time for caution and a time to just go for broke .Would have prefered to see us going all out for the win from the start.

I don't know that it was all about the formation Woof - We still played with one up in the second half but we showed more urgency, played higher up the pitch and everyone (even Djimi) was looking to get invlolved in the final third of the field.
Plus Cisse made a big difference for me. His pace scares the life out of opposing defences, just him being on the pitch changed the game for me.

I have an inkling Rafa will start him in the final.

I wonder how many games we would have won playing with a bit more abandon away from home this season.

Hopefully Rafa will suss this out for next year.
