Maybe there is something not right at the academy, I don't know.

But IMO there is only so much the academy itself can do to develop players.  The players have to be talented enough to begin with.  I think we need to be looking further afield as well as bringing in players from Liverpool and its surrounding areas to the academy.  I know there are a few boys from scotland and ireland but I'm talking about even further afield than that.  Rafa has talked about expanding the scouting network and i think in the future you will see players from south america and africa coming to the academy at an earlier age and I'm all for that.

Chelski brought Huth over at about 16, arsenal have senderos, flamini, fabregas, luque and cliche.  All these guys look like they are going to be good.  At the moment there are no 'foreigners' in our youth setup but i think rafa will change that.

A PROVEN WINNER though........

I want to see less of the signings with the word 'potential' wrapped around them, let's get some proven winners in the squad and win trophies.  That's what it's all about isn't it?

Like Morientes and Pellegrino?
Maybe I'm being harsh on Morientes but looking at a 29 year old Baraja, even though he is great, as a replacement for an English Steven Gerrard with a few years till he peaks is insane.

Lets look at the young/academy players we have:
Carson has potential (he's not even from the academy)
Warnock looks alright
Welsh could be something but it's impossible to say
Potter is not good at all
Mellor scored a few goals but can you see him challenging a decent line up of international strikers?
We have seen next to nothing of Foy, Raven, Mannix(sp) etc

Show me a football Academy that churns out top class pros year after year.
Every now and then a club hits the jackpot it and produces several players all at once e.g. Fowler, Mcmanaman, Huchison (early 90s), Owen, Gerrard, Carra (late 90s), Scholes, Beckham and the Chuckles, Lampard, Carrick, Cole & Ferdinand etc. This tends to be the exception not the rule.

The majority of academy players at most top clubs fail to make the grade. Occasionally a player comes through and blossoms like a Steven Gerrard but we're not gonna turn out players like this all that often. The club is in good shape if we can turn out a few more like Carragher - Solid dependable types who, given time with the first team squad can grow into fine players. I don't think our academy is doing too badly right now. Warnock, while not setting the world on fire, looks like a solid player with the raw skills and attitude to make it at this level. On the few occasions i have seen Potter he looks like he could make it.

Those of you proclaiming the likes of Whitbread, Mannix, Welsh, Raven, Potter and co (League Cup anyone?) will never be up to it. I can only assume you have been attending lots of reserve team/academy league fixtures this season coz i haven't seen enough of these players to write them off just yet.

What worries me is that Rafa is buying players like Josemi, Pellegrino and Nunez, and using players like Troare regulary.

No one is saying that we have to produce world beaters every year, but that fact that we cant produce players of the same quality as mentioned above and that fact that our youth team is bottom of their league with a goal differnece of -28, seriously worries me.

I player like Whitbread needs to go out on loan to see if he can develop with first team football. But he may find it difficult to find a club that will offer him first team football. He hasnt shown any particular promise to suggest he will be able to be part of the first team squad here at Liverpool.

Anyway, back to Baraja. Like Jonnymac, I was blown away by his prowess when Valencia shat on us a few seasons back and have been advocating him on here for a long time. His style and strength would fit in nicely to LFC and the premiership

The £12m fee mentioned would never happen, like most transfers the eventual fee is nothing like what the papers predict

I reckon he would be virtually the perfect replacement for Gerrard if he goes

Josemi-2 million
Nunez- free
Pellegrino-free

. He bought Josemi for cover which actually got Finnan to be better this season. He wanted Morientes not Nunez. Pellegrino was brought for cover.

You have clearly manipulated my post.

The point I was trying to make was that it worries me that we cant even produce players of that quality through the academy.

Of course I have :D

Neither can anybody else in England. Owen,Gerrard,Fowler,Carra these types of players are a rarity in our academy.

Downing from Boro is the only one from any academy that has been good rescently.

Arsenal buys young players from other clubs, and Chelsea well they tell their own story.

Again you have misunderstood.

I wasn’t talking about Owen, Gerrard, Fowler, etc.

The players I mentioned are not of that calibre, I was saying that we should be able to produce players of that quality (the ones I mentioned, i.e. Nunez, Josemi, etc) rather than having to pay fees and go abroad.
