Baraja

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Liverpool are paving the way for Steven Gerrard's possible summer departure by trying to sign Valencia's power house midfielder Ruben Baraja.
The Valencia midfielder is one of Rafa Benitez's favourite players and Liverpool sounded him out before Benitez even arrived at Anfield.

Baraja, 29, was at the heart of the Valencia side that twice stole the title away from Real Madrid and Barcelona under Benitez and, with 36 Spanish caps is one of his country's most experienced players.

Barja would cost 12 million but Benitez has been promised funds by the Anfield board so that will be no problem.

Even if Benitez manages to convince Gerrard to stay for another year then Baraja would still be top of the manager's shopping list.

Baraja has told friends in Spain he wants to play in the Premiership and would be delighted to link up with Benitez once again.

Pure speculation but I would love to see it happen. Now you could argue that Baraja wouldn't want to come to a side that isn't going to be playing Champions League football next season however Benitez is a big name and Spain, many respect him and players would love to play for him so Baraja comming here wouldn't be impossible.

Luis Garcia left Barcelona who guarantee Champions League football every year, he left Barca to join us because he knows what kind of manager Benitez is as he's worked with him before, that and the Premiership is a challenge managers/players want to take.

Xabi Alonso turned down Real Madrid in order to play under a manager such as Benitez.

So anything is possible. We can still get players we want in the summer despite not being able to play CL football next season, we got the money, we got the manager to get the players we want and lets not forget that L.F.C is still and always be a big name for players world-wide.

When we played Valencia at the Mestalla a couple of season back in the Champions League, Baraja was the best player on the pitch for me that night, if I'm not mistaken, he scored their first goal.

Bring him on I say, in fact I've wanted him in our team since that night.

Let's alo get Joaquin while we're on the subject of Spaniards.

Regardless of which way the Gerrard saga goes. I reckon (and have thought so since Benitez got here) that Baraja will be a Liverpool player next season. Wouldn't be surprised to see Baros and a few quid going the other way in return.

love to see baraja here. but shouldn't the limited funds go to where it'd matter more? someone who can deliver crosses in from the wings and someone to deny pellegrino a contract?? unless SG is indeed leaving?

According to press reports our team will be mostly Spanish next season:

               Canizares

Josemi  Cesar Juanito Del Horno

Joaquin Baraja Alonso Vicente

                Aimar

                Mista

Subs

Luque
Garcia
Nunez
Albelda
Reina

:D

I hope Rafa don't go over board with the Spanish signings. I feel the club is really starting to lose its identity.

We have always been renowned for having players from the youth set up progressing into the first team. Over the last few years things have seriously gone wrong. At the moment we are just not producing good enough players.

The academy hasn't produced any players that have progressed into regular Premiership players. This must me something of a worry, I think something is not right at the Academy. It needs to be analysed by Rafa and maybe alterations need to be made to training methods, etc.

Probably it's easier for Rafa to talk to the players when all of them speak spanish...

So were John Welsh, Partridge, John Otsemober, etc.

The academy cost us something in the region of 13MIL to set up, so far we have had nothing in return.

Don’t say Gerrard because he made his Debut in 1998, and the academy was set up 5 years ago.

Steve Morgan was complaining about the same thing, we have spent all this money on a state of the art academy and it hasn’t produced any players that are god enough to play in the Premiership.

A bit worrying don’t you think.

A PROVEN WINNER though........

I want to see less of the signings with the word 'potential' wrapped around them, let's get some proven winners in the squad and win trophies.  That's what it's all about isn't it?

Bring him over I say. I'm not a student of La Liga but on the few occasions I have seen him play I have always been mightily impressed. Looks a little more sturdy than some that get mentioned aswell.

give it a year or 2 more....whitbread should be in the 1st team squad in the next year or so. Darren Potter has the built and posses good touch (i rate him higher than welsh). He should be a good squad player. And mellor is not that bad isn't he. So it is not really that bad.  Like you said. it was set up 5 years ago. Will give it a few more years. But then again, i am pretty lenient in these stuff.....

I may be being harsh but.

Whitbread and Potter will never make Premierhship players.

Mellor is simply not good enough for a club with the ambitons of LFC.

well...even if they don't make our team, i reckon we can sell them off.

mellor - 750k
Whitebread - 500k
potter - 500k
Welsh - 500k

so about 2.25 million....not that bad. Yeah i know they are pretty bad compared to what middlesboro are producing now. But, have to give them time. Theres nothing much we can do.

Baraja is a good player but I would only sign him if gerrard goes (and i don't think he will).  Bit pricey for someone nearly 30 also

Creative wide players, a centre half and a goalkeeper must be our priorities.  Maybe another striker also if baros goes
